Here is a link to a UK Forum that has the latest press release from Land Rover about the 2007 Defender:

The dash and interior certainly look more refined, and it does look like the dash could accommodate the air bags.

The 7 seats would be a winner in the NA market too, and could mark it as the "Sophisticated Man's (or MILF's) Hummer"

a) I don't think the bulkhead will stand up to our crash tests (wasn't that a problem with the earlier "generations"?)

b) How many of LR's modern clientele are going to buy a truck with a manual transmission?

c) All that work on the interior and they are still using that ghastly steering wheel?

d)I haven't seen anything mentioning using the sort of advances particulate traps and emissions converters that other companies (ie MB "BlueTec") are using to meet Cali's upcoming emissions requirements.

:agree:

LR wouldn't dream of selling a vehicle in the US with an interior that spartan. It doesn't jive with the US branding/marketing message. The FJ Cruiser is more upscale than that.

D90s didn't jive with the period Discos, P38s and RRCs back when they made it stateside and shared stealership space either. I'm not saying they are headed our way, I'm just trying to look at the glass as half full.;)

A) Yes it will

B) Are you kidding? That 6-speed is going to rock! "modern clientele"??? WTF?

C) I dig the steering wheel. It's a Defender, not a LR3

D) California sucks anyway. Beside that, I'm betting it will share the new Ford diesel that burns clean. It was on ABC this morning. Amazing little motor.

Maybe this re-post can clear it up for you. This is what we want. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSh9uwITqVM&mode=related&search=

I don't know. I think the most promising thing is that they are making a big rebuild, but not changing it -- still has solid axles, still actually is a Defender, not an FJ Cruiser trying to be like the old FJ's. That is the most promising news I've heard on the Defender in a long time -- reguardless of whether it comes to NA or not.

a) Wasn't sure, thought I had heard something about that in the past.
b) Yes the 6-spd will be awesome, but why do you need 6 "widely spaced gears" when 4 or 5 has worked for ~50 years. Look at 99% of who shops for LR's, guarantee Mrs. Soccermom would rather have an H2 w/and autobox than a Defender with a 6-spd. That's just the way it works. D-Web is not who LRNA is aiming at, ever, it's just something we have to get used to.
c) I've always thought it was ugly, doesn't have to be fancy, just not a holdover from the 80's is all.
d) Yeah, and hopefully.

I don't know because I have not driven one, but with the 6-speed, I would say 1st gear would only be used when towing heavy loads, on steep hills, or off-road; kind of like a granny gear found in most diesel trucks, old CJ-7's with the T18 transmission, and some older Ford trucks.

2 through 5 would be the normal driving gears, and 6th would be overdrive.

Wha wha wha what?

Where am I getting confused here? Minor exterior differences (like the 03/04 D2). Keeps the solid axle (like the 03/04 D2). New engine (like the 03/04 D2). Reworked (ruined) interior...

"Alls" I am saying is that the 07 Defender seems to be following the D2 model. One last hurrah before moving over to the LR3 platform. They probably just took the engine and some interior components already designed for the 08 Defender and grafted it into the 07 to prop up sales before 08.

Anyway, that's just me gut feeling. I hope I am wrong and the current body style (or something better - hah!) makes it to the US.

We've seen this before - the '95 RR Classic with the Discovery dash.

I think you have a point about standard transmissions in the NA market, but I don't think an auto would be out of the question. The are probably talking up the 6 speed to point out the great strides that have been made. After all, this is a marketing puff piece and there isn't much exciting about a slush box.

Ugly or not, there seems to be an apetite. Look at the MB G-Wagen: every bit as ugly as a Defender, maybe even more so:ack:.

With global sales of only 25,000,selling a few thousand in the NA market could result in a meaningful global increase of >10%

All they need to do is get some product placement in a rap video and they won't be able to keep them in the dealer! Worked for Aston Martin and the Range Rover.

The Ford Transit/London Taxi Diesel 2.4 is EPA/DOT approved for autos only

They wont redo emissions for a 5 speed stick

Nice to see the Old Rangie steering wheel still being used

Gear ratios in the transit are as follows

Transmission
Gear ratios 1 st 4.20
2 nd 2.24
3 rd 1.37
4 th 1.00
5 th 0.76
Reverse 3.60

Send over the diesel 6-speed and I'm in for a D-90. Sure, it's not too pretty, the hood is a little weird (but functional to house the CRD), the facia sems out of place, but its a Defender underneath. Plus, it looks to have CDL. Combine the CDL with ETC (like my 04 DII) and factor in its 45 deg. approach and 50 deg. departure angles and you have one of the most capable, off the show room floor trucks. Yes, the Rubicon and FJ have factory lockers, but they still should lose out to a Defender off-road.
