Boy did this thread blow up

Well I got around to checking on my shafts, and I have uncool amounts of play in the u-joints at both the front and rear differential ends of the shafts. I went ahead and shot a tad more grease in and strangely enough- although none of the joints seemed to really need it- the greasing seems to have lessened the vibration a great deal for the time being.

what are the actual angles at the pinion and for what style shaft?

keep in mind for every * out the life of the joint is shortened by 10% under ideal conditions. Add in shock loads and such and that incorrect geometry will shorten the life even more.

My mother isn't fat - but I do tell her every time I work on it (which is ALL the time) that her Jaguar is a piece of sh!t.

For what it's worth I will gladly tell it like it is - if I can stick around here after being told I was a f@%king idiot for even thinking of putting a TDI in a D2....

And I will happily tell Dan to eat my bawls if needed - but honestly I see no need, and thank gawd for that cause I think he'd be able to kick my ass pretty well :ack:

Doug
Not for putting the Tdi in, but maybe for selling it! ;)

"Professional" doesn't mean the guy has to be nice. Just semi-articulate and truthful. Surely there is someone on this site who meets this minimal qualification.:p Let the ball fall where it may.

I would agree that Will may not be the best person to come out as there may be some perception of bias. I do believe will would be truthful though.

I am open to letting you guys decide who to send with one caveat. I reserve the option to reject based on their previous postings. If I see that when someone asks a legitimate question or posts a reasonable response and this person frequently goes off topic with things like "your mother?s a whore," I will reject them as I want whatever is written to be done by someone who is respected in your community. The occasional "Fuck" in their writings would not be a dis-qualifier. In essence, I don't see frequent hostility as "professional."

Another thing for your consideration would be travel times. A Friday visit works best for me. It is typically a slower day and we would be able to devote all the time necessary for photos questions. I am thinking along the line of; Fly out on Thursday after noon. See the shop, get your drive shaft built in your presence, let us demonstrate the balancing procedures and go to dinner on Friday and return home on Saturday.

I will watch this string for the rest of the week to see what you guys decide.

As I recall your posting (no time right now for a review of the string), you said the local drive line guy called them "crap." In any cas though, no offence taken.

One other thing on the person coming out. I hope you enjoy a coctail or two with dinner.

Well I would vote for PT just because helping anyone outa IN for any length of time might get me into heaven :D but then his shop would burn down and he wont make the wheeling trip in 2 weeks.

I would vote for myself but clearly people here know that I allready believe that Tom Wood builds the best shafts out there and has the best intrests of our community in the way he conducts business...so I am out.

So I vote for Doug because he knows what quality work looks like and he has experience across a number of makes of 4x4s. He also has shown himself as being a long term member of the community and has provided quality content to the forum.

I nominate Doug the roving beetle :D

I am sure people may think that it would be "bias" but at the same time selling parts and working on Land Rovers is not a weekend hobby of mine.
It is my full time gig--It pays my bills.....
With that being said if I saw any reason to bail on Tom and his work in order to save the integrity of mine don't think I would not.
Over the years I have severed many relationships that could be damaging to mine and my place in the community.

I do want someone else to visit Tom... For the main reason of I don't have enough time!

I stand behind the quality and professionalism of TW in his relationship with me...and his products.

I am reluctant to post this but since someone nominated Bill (GBR) I will suggest that it may be good to visit Bill too. He is in Salt Lake (about 45 miles from us) and you can see how he builds drive shafts while you're in town for a real "apples to apples" comparison. Rather than apples to the unknown.

I hope I was not mis-understood. I have no animosity towards Bill either. Or anyone else I can think of. Life is too short!

I was serious when I e-mailed you.

I can make the time and I would love to see how driveshafts are balanced. I don't have any animosity toward Bill :D

Irregardless of peoples opinions, a TW front shaft will be a purchase for my G4 in the near future. If I had the time, I'd drive down there to have it made and installed in Utah. But that is about 900 miles out of the way:ack:

I'm for Roving Beetle as well. He has a diverse skill-set, he is obviously intelligent, and it is readily apparent that he is willing to look at unique solutions to problems rather than sticking with conventional wisdom.

Will Tillery is an honest man, and well deserving of a vacation and a fun trip to the shop. That said, his successful dealer status might be perceived in the future as bias, and I'd hate to see it damage his reputation. I think we all know he won't pull punches, but perhaps not everyone knows this. I hate to say that, I really do, because Tillery has done a lot for the community. This isn't about who deserves a vacation, though.

I think, for the good of the inspection, and the good of the reputation of the inspector, it ought to be someone not affiliated in any way with Tom.

This is not to suggest that I have a problem with Tom Woods shafts. I don't. I just like this idea and I'd like to see it done properly if it's going to be done at all.

Cheers,

Kennith

I have DC shafts front and back and honestly cant remember my angles.... let me look for my notes real quick from when I ordered them.................cant seem to find them but I might go out in a little but and climb under there and take a look.

I will say that so far I have noticed that install/removal of the TW shafts seems to be twice as time consuming as regular Rover propshafts, but only because everything is so much beefier- so not exactly a bad thing I guess.
