Saying that alcohol makes you a better driver is pathetic. A feeling of better control is a classic symptom of intoxication and when used to defend drinking and driving, it's at worst a symptom of alcoholism, and at best a rationalization of bad behavior. You can't compare the adrenaline rush - you're rationalizing. Just because there are sober morons on the trail does not make your vice acceptable.

I still am shocked that people not only think it's OK to down a beer on the trail, they actually think it makes for better drivers. Insanity!
James,

is it a response to my post?
If so, please show me where I said alcohol makes one a better driver.
I am perfectly okay with a beer at a lunch stop. I hope it doesn't make me a better driver or a worse driver, and I hope I am sane enough to see the difference.

Now, this - "A feeling of better control is a classic symptom of intoxication" - is a perfect response to Kevin's assertion that adrenaline rush is a good thing. It may elevate one's senses, but not necessarily improve judgment.

Interestinly enough, Myth Busters just busted a myth last night surrounding (in part) this topic. The Myth, "Driving while talking on a cell phone is equally as imparing as driving while intoxicated."

The drivers each drove a course sober, then while talking on the cell phone and then again following two beers for a .07 ABC.

The results? They ALL FAILED the course after drinking and also while talking on the phone.

If you really think that Alcohol is needed to calm nerves and aid in better (slower, more methodical) judgment--then maybe you're too uptight to begin with.

Great. Now in addition to having our trails threatened for closure...we're inviting M.A.D.D. to the party.

Calm down dude
I for one never said it made you a better driver or do i condone drinking and driving.
Read back.

All i said is ---- if you(or anybody here) partakes in alcoholic beverages ,sometime in your life you have had just one and gotten behind the wheel .

Lunch break, after work drink, hot dog and beer at the game, long hard climb in your Rover,on the beach BBQing.IMO nothing wrong with this.
Moderation or abstinance according to situation at the time.

so get down off that Horse Named Rightious your sitting on .
Your in denial , unless you have never had an alcoholic beverage your intire life, if so i apologize and offer my respect for your abstinance.:)

I have never smoked a cigarette in my whole life and im over 40.

Guys, I was directing part of that post to the person who said that with a beer, the driver that rolled might have picked a better line.

I don't like beer, but I do drink a margarita or wine from time-to-time - in the privacy of my own home or with the wife driving us back. I'm 38 now, and did not drink at all until my late 20's. When I first started, yes I was guilty of having one drink and driving back to the house. I quickly realized that that was very poor judgement and decided to never do it again. I have to be even more careful today because I conceal carry. If I am packing, there does not have to even be a legal limit to get arrested. In Texas it is completely at the discretion of the officer as to whether even one is too many, then you're in a shitload of trouble. So, as a rule, I try not to drink outside the home, and if I do, I must plan ahead so that there is not a weapon in the vehicle.

I'm not saying that having a beer at lunch and then driving makes you a bad or evil person, I'm saying it's not a wise thing to do. I'm also saying that if I were on the trail with anyone that did so, it would be my prerogative to bring it up with the trail leader or leave myself, depending on the situation. Fair?

I am not sure whether I have said it or Rob worded it better, but the driver of that RRC picked the worst possible line out of a few. Any contribution to his fate, be it a beer five years prior to this event or a pebble under his tire, would've resulted in picking a better line.

Peter, I understood from your statement (because of the context of RoverDude's post) a defense of high-risk behavior instead of sarcasm at the line picked, or perhaps both. I stand corrected as to your position. I'd still like to hear RoverDude's thoughts.

Hell, I was going to have a margarita for lunch, but I was with the boss.

Yeah, that's what we need around town, a drunck guy in a boom truck! You know, admitting that you have a problem is the first step to recovery.

The thing is, didn't Jesus drink wine for lunch? I think its probably to have a beer (or wine or Margarita) if Jesus did it...

As a Christian and a Land Rover owner there is no doubt in my mind Jesus would be driving a series Rover. Probably a Series IIa 109 SW. He would need the room to haul his crew around.
