Thanks for the knowledge. I have to bookmark this thread to come back to from time to time. Hopefully other folks will chime in with their camera experiences.

Never shoot from standing up. (This one is funny, 99% of photographs taken are from an average of 5'7". It's amazing how great composition changes when you squat down or get just a little elevation. You will never see a true professional photographer shoot from that level it is either at waist level or an apple box higher.)

This is so true. It funny how many baby / little kid pics that are obviously taken standing fully straight up. Just getting to eye level with the child makes a huge difference. Another tip for portraits is to put the subject off of the center axis so that the person is 1/3 of the way into the frame. Obviously lock the focus in first.

Another thing that comes to mind with composition is that most of the time you should either move closer or farther away from the subject compared to what feels right.

Ben, I just don't get people sometimes. That one guy is a total ass. Probably goes home at night and hugs his precious star trek collection. LOL. During the "pepsi challenge" I thought the D70s was a very nice camera. The three main reasons I chose the 20D was" 2 additional MP, the menu display / menu control, and finally the feel. Yes it just felt good :D

On another note Ben, I grew up about 1.5 hours north of you in a little town called Chehalis. Next time I go home to see the parents, we should hook up for a beverage.
I don't know what it is, but the the camera is turning out to be a lot like the Rover. I get a lot of dirty looks driving around in Portland with the Rover.

Do let me know if you ever come this way. Don't you work for Boeing or something?

Photography is a wonderful thing.

I encourage everyone to visit this photographers site.

I dabble in all aspects of photography and pretty much consider myself a jack of all trades master of none....this photography is one genre I have never ventured into. I had a chance to go to Iraq and signed on to go and then chickened out at last minute...I really wished sometimes I had made the journey but it was right around the time Nick Berg lost his head in Iraq literally and I had a bad gut feeling and watched that video of him and put myself and my own family in that position.

I decided against going, but regret all the great images I would have gotten and the advancement of my photographic career if I had of made it back alive and intact.

Although they are not featured in his website (probably because they are now the property of the AP) Jim won two Pulizers last year for his photography in Iraq, both photos featured my brother in the fighting in Najaf, Iraq. Any of the photos that are labeled Najaf or Falluja are of my brother's platoon, in which he was a Squad leader and Platoon Sgt.

He has been shooting film for a long time. When he went to Iraq the AP gave him a 20D and some other Canon. But, in his own words, he had his personal equipment, a D70 and a D2h sent out to him after Najaf because they are, "more intuitive, and easier to use on the fly."

Which doesn't actually say much, since that is a pretty subjective judgement. But hey, he used both!!

More great stuff....yeah it was the Associated Press that offered the assignment to me as well. I was taking my own gear though. They were going to furnish a new Laptop though that I would have been able to keep....whoohoo

Just ordered a Pelican 1524 case with Adjustable Padded Divider System. Here's a pic:

:D

Paul,

That Pelican case is cool for storage of your gear, but is NOT feasible for when you are actually using your gear. You need a good camera bag...my favorite for professionals are Domke...they are the best bar none.

I myself still like the shoulder strap style of the Domke J1 or F5....I keep a bag with my extra gear on my shoulder or very close by at all times. I always have at least 2 camera bodies with me at all times...again why I like the bigger Domke J1 or F5, but if you just have a single body a Domke F2 or F3 should work nicely.

Here is an original Jim Domke F2....my favorite of all time

When I purchased that 1524, I was thinking strictly on the basis of storage and transport in the Pig. I like that bag you linked, but what about in the outdoors? In my mind, a back-pack type set-up would be great for hiking / climbing over stuff. Last year at Moab, I was trying to carry a camera while climbing up some rocks to get pictures. One wrong move and that camera is in pieces

LOL! Thanks guys. Last night I was looking at Macro lenses for that whole 1 to 1 thing at 7 inches. Pretty cool stuff.

Tomorrow I am flying to Jacksonville, NC for work. I am going to take a Canon Powershot G6 (7.1mp) and try to shoot some aircraft flying around. :D

The JDAM was called in by a SEALs team that was with my brother's platoon. His FC and the SEALs got tired of being shot at from that building, they couldn't tell where it was coming from. So they just had it bombed. It really is as close as it looks in the photo, only across the street and down a block from where the photo was taken.

Have you checked out these Paul?

Lowepro:

I'm digging this one, not just because it has rover in the name either.

Or Kata:

Their stuff is a little more funky. On the plus side, they also make body armor.
