We basically followed the ridge line road south out of Cheaha State Park - it's Alabama FS road 600 - look it up on a map of the Talladega National Forest. You can run about thirty miles of dirt road along the ridge with scenic views off either side. Its an easy ride with only minimal off-road skills required - good "Bunny Ride" as we call it. There are some side roads we want to go back and explore when we don't have as many trucks along.

D2Dave, I have heard Cheaha is nice. I go to Oak Mountaina nearly once a week for hiking and mountain biking - There are several great bike trails.

I don't off road around here at the moment - that is why I am trying to learn about local trails. I go to UAB so I dont get too much free time - and money is slim. I do most of my wheeling back home in North Alabama and sometimes in TN. Do you know anything about Gray Rock or Kentuck? I would definately be up for some trail riding at Oak Mountain.

I don't know how I missed this thread the last couple of days. I've been to Gray Rock several times. It's a little expensive, but it is fun. They have everything from graded dirt roads, to moderate trails that need nothing more than a small lift and sliders, to full blown rock crawler type trails. All of the trails have dirt roads that lead to them so even if you aren't a big rig, you can pull right up next to the trail and watch them thrash up the hills.

Also in the Heflin area is another ORV park. It's called Morris Mountain and I think the website is www.morrismountainorv.com I've never been so I have no first hand knowledge but I've heard it's pretty nice as well.

i grew up in b'ham, when i was there for thanksgiving, all of the good spots were now developments. there is still a bit out around moody. but you will need a local to find any of it.
bankhead national forest used to have a lot of nice rutted out hunting trails, we would spend days camping /exploring them.
pigeon mountain in georgia is worth the drive they have some nice 4x4 trails and places to spelunk or boulder. they are both managment areas so hunting season is not a good time to go, you stand a chance of pissing off some well armed rednecks.

I was just up there a month or so ago riding the Toys for Tots ride at Gray Rock. Jason and I have been talking about riding the Gardendale trails sometime this winter since I've never been. I hope to mount my new tires and wheels this weekend so I'll at least have a good off road tire. I still need to mount my RTE steering links but just haven't had the time. No time is also the reason I haven't gotten up there yet. I hope to get back up there in the next month or so.
