Forgot to add do replace the TBI heater gasket. It's the metal box with pipes going into it that sits above the driver side rocker cover. It will leak sooner or later. I put new hose clamps on the hoses too as the originals are crap.

My 5 speed DII has 125,000 kilometres on it and has just started to show signs of leaking (v-slow) around the throttle....I will probably just replace the gasket as it seems a small job and small cost for the part. I have had not drivetrain problems. The ABS modulator pump was replaced at 40,000 ks and the new one hasnt played up...but an important way of keeping the muck out of the valve bodies is to activate the ABS every month (ie get it chattering) and do a full blead every 50,000 k or so and use Testbook or similar to cycle the pump and blead every bit out. The suspension is tight and quiet. The cab is pretty quiet also. I had a window regulator fail at about 50,000 k. I had 3 bolts fall out of the exhaust manifold pipes where they join at the engine pipe...replaced those pretty easilt and engine pipe gasket on both sides. Apart from that the gearbox shifts quietly and quickly and its all (touch wood) good. Everything is original.

I have a 95 D1 that now has 250,000 kilometres on her - auto 3.9. Very very nice old girl. Just recently replaced radiator, alternator and brake booster and master cylinder. Have replaced the LR Lucas Dizzy with a GMH Australian Distributor custom machined for the Disco - complete with Australian Bosch amp module......should have done it years ago...seriously sweet. Apart from that the ZF recently got a service and the pump noise went away with new oil. The drivetrain is all stock and original and the engine has excellent compression. All orginal injectors, looms, etc and it runs mostly on LPG (Liquid Petrolium Gas). I did the heater matrix also because of the dreaded hot water foot shower. I had it re-cored with brass and copper fittings. She runs all original gear apart from that.

I am fastidious with the maintenance of my vehicles and I think that shows.

Cheers

2001 Disco - I've had every one of these problems in this order. It's a nice looking truck that is poorly built.

Given the title of this thread, do you reckon that by mid to late 2001 they had their act together a bit more and had less faults generally? My 02 is a late 01 build and was about the third last disco sold in Australia before the small round headlight model was released.

hey, isn't the throttle body heater a recalled item? I had mine on my D2 replaced by the stealership on recall a few years back...

BTW, I LOVE my 2000 D2, I will never let her die, or sell her...

Alright, i started put all back together. Finished with Head gasket, exhaust manifold.
Ready with intake/injectors/wires but question about cylinder order.
I see the diagram of ignition coil layout but rave doesn't have layout for cylinder, just mentioned LH cylinders 1,3,5,7 and RH 2,4,6,8. Does it mean 1 and 2 located front of Engine? so cylinder 7 is the closest to the driver?
Thanks.

Just finished all head gasket job. So far engine runs good.
Now I'm planning for front prop shaft.

So far with 87k miles on Yr.2000 D2.
1. 3Amigos done with valve kit - very easy job, 30min.
2. Brake rotors/pad - Not difficult but took some effort/time hammering out the tires/rotos, few hrs.
3. Head gasket done with gasket kit - pretty much straight forward.
Getting one head bolt (closest to driver) out was bit tough.
Just have good memo and photo before move on to next items to take off. 3weekend and some nights on weekdays, definitely doable in 2weekend but not sure about just two days (sat/sun) because need time to clean before reassemble.

Thanks for good info eveyone, more to follow.

My home is where my Disco is
So far:
72 K 99 D2 manual
-New plugs, leads, rad, MAF and belt tensioners at 36K
-50K meant new rad hoses, diff pinion and crankshaft oil seals
-New ABS modulator plates (warranty) at 38K (was told by the stealership)
-72K and disaster strucks! Complete head gasket repair, new rubber bushes all round, new tyres, new ACE modulator and new ACE pipe (only one of them, the front lowest one).

Might mine be a late friday afternoon special?
Cheers from Spain

I love my Disco but unless product quality improves (or I hit the Lotto) this will be my first and last Land Rover. I love it and am willing to over come some of it's quirks, but to be totaly honest; it is a piece of shit.

It hurts to hear this......But it's so true!!!!!!!!!! They have to thank god for hitting it dead on with its looks....Cause if it wasn't for that, that model would have died a long time ago. Just like the LADA Niva piece of crap.

Hey there! Easy with Lada Niva! While its on a different planet altogether, no, make that a different universe, light years away from the Disco we all came to love so much/hate a little, lil' Ladas 4x4 could be fun! Think much smaller (yet larger than RAV4), simplified/dummified Disco, with crappiest interior imaginable, and no AC but a mean heater, a 4-banger, constant 4x4, de-multiplicator (low gearing), sits high and simple to fix as long as old Fiat parts are available, and it's a manual! These could be quite fun in the snow or in the sand (and you may add an AC from aftermarket), I tried and kind a fell in a bad love, too.
Wonderful thread, i share the pain :)

Got lucky ... so far. Even a blind squirrel stumbles into an acorn once in a while. Bought a cherry to the bone 99DII with 135000 mi for $3k. Recent receipts for rebuilt trans, center diff, drive shafts, tune ups, misc. I replaced tries, tightened outside valve cover bolts, new battery, tightened rotaflex, changed crank pos sensor. Everything works & runs like new. Here is the question ... previous owner sez head gaskets never changed ... truck still runs like brand new ... but all of these posts said it should be dead. Will these engines go to 200k if taken care of. I saw a previous post of somebody at 350k. Back in the day I had a Buick Skylark with 200k+ ... no problem.

My guess it that your HG (top end gaskets) were replaced by the owner before the previous owner. There's a chance it's on the originals but I doubt it at 135K. Do you have coolant?

BTW, digging up bones. This thread started before any of the original posters work was done to my 02. Now...... ALL of it's been done. Even a new wiper motor and switch (switch included with wiper motor, Thanks LR!) Muskyman.:D

Truck runs fine ... never looses a drop pf coolant. Tanks for the info ... I'm owner #3, owner #2 from 50k to 130k sez no head work, owner #1 was lease, is it possible to get dealer service records from Rover Corporate as I do not know the original dealer or lessee. BTW this forum seems to be much more technical (a good thing) than some of the other boards.
