Excellent post for a D2. Now whats up with the D1. My 98 just hit the 100,000 mark this weekend. Basic maintance tune-ups, waterpump, abs sencor, door auculator, swivel ball gaskets, tie rod ends, and all major fluid changes. Like many this truck can piss me off but, still love it. Looking for a new one to drive when this one is back in the shop. Good luck everyone and have fun.

OK, here's my story:

01 Disco II

bought with 73k

put junkyard motor w/2500 mi. in @ 83k
old motor had slipped sleeve and unknown other probs
replaced MAF also
currently @ 102k on truck

have run mobil1 consistently in new motor every 3k mi.
I use premium texaco fuel, as expensive as it may get :banghead:
- my black beauty deserves only the best
I do have a K&N air filter, I love them never had a problem with K&N

drive train just started making weird clicking noises under decelleration and minimal throttle, but only in a drive gear, not in neutral - any ideas?
clicking gets faster as I speed up

I love my black beast, but it is not reliable at all
half of me and all my friends think it is junk, they say get a chevy
the other half says I love her, its tough

You can too kill 'em. I killed my D2 in a head-on collision. I now have a D1 and I'm very happy not to see the stealership and seldom my mechanic. My only complaint is that I have had it at home not leaking power steering fluid for a month now, so I drive to Palm Springs, park in the driveway of a friends 2 million dollar home and the sumbitch leaks powersteering fluid on the driveway. Then I get home last night and the sumbitch doesn't leak one drop on my driveway....it must be haunted or it hates wealthy people.

Had mine probably about eight months so far. It has needed a MAF sensor and now a water pump. Admittedly it has high mileage but I am wondering why I got rid of my ranger that had 160k miles on it. I have a feeling I might not be keeping this truck too long, but I really like having a vehicle that can go anywhere however dependability is a big thing too.

While I always thought of myself as a true LR enthusiast (worked for their ad agency, been to Solihill and Eastnor and 'wheeled and maintained my 2000 DII for 7-years),I guess I never really had to pay my dues until today. And what dues they were! Sure I've gone through the typical (for a LR) things like a leaking radiator, dead MAF, failed idler pulleys and copious recalls but the really big things somehow escaped me. I always thought I was living on a fault line and this week the quake struck to the tune of $2400+.

What started as a trip to LR Nashville (who were great and actually gave me a 15% 'grief' discount) for the 60K service (an additional $850) quickly turned into replacement of both head gaskets, a water pump, leaking throttle body heater plate and a few micellaneous faults. No they didn;t rip me off- I knew it had been leaking fluid- but it's unconscionable that a truck that has been exceedingly well cared-for should need to have this sort of service at 60K miles. And I still have a leaking oil pan and timing cover gasket that they want an additional $1,000 to fix (which I may end up doing myself).

Yes I still love my Disco, as does my wife and 5-yr old son, but honestly it's no wonder LR is consistently near the bottom of owner loyalty and quality studies. So, thanks for allowing me to rant a bit, I feel much better now.

Funny how the thought of a Land Cruiser is starting to seem much more appealing.

Wow, great post. I really encourage DII owners to pay attention to the coolant issues. Mine wasn't leaking a drop, but the head gaskets blew and allowed coolant to flow into the oil. There were NO SIGNS at all; performance or leaking fluids. It happened right after an oil change (of course) so I drove a couple of thousand miles with chocolate milk for oil.

The end result was an almost total engine rebuild. I just got it back and it drives like brand new, but I wish it could have been avoided.

If you're driving a DII with more than 70,000 miles on it, I would recommend doing the head gaskets, valley pan, and throttle body as preventive maintenance. Don't put it off and pay the price like me.

to clarify: what I was saying was if I'm going a certain speed and its making the noise, i throw it into neutral, the noise stops.

It sounds like the noise when you put a baseball card on your bike as a little kid to make it sound cool.

is the throttle body prob with the V8 or is it same for TD5? i've been told the plastic dowells in the head can strip costing a gasket at best. i have 150,000kms so far and have had some minor stuff.hopefully previous owner had some of these fixed and was quiet about it at time of sale.i take mine to LR specialist every second service so he can keep an eye on any leaks or common potential probs i might miss.

*Lets just hope everybodys disco's have minimal probs so we can have bragging rights at the local tavern for a change!;) *

Great thread. I'm currently looking at purchasing an 04 DII and have been doing quite a bit of research on this site. Are the problems documented in this thread just as common for the 4.6L as they are for the 4.0L?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I had those problems and more with the D2. Problem solved - I now have a D1 I've put 80k on it since June 05. Now has 199k on it. I just had it smogged yesterday it's very clean running still. I've had very few problems with it.

So Jim are you saying we need to total our DII's like you did and get a DI?;)

This is a good common stuff wrong thread. Should sticky this thing.

Anyway add a front driveshaft to my other post. I did the U joints just on a maintenance thing and because of the warnings here and I found two bearing cups rather dry with the beginnings of metal shavings. Both cups were in the double joint next to the cat.

I had a gurgle problem in the heater core as mentioned, for me I had to reverse the hoses/flow in the core and do some trickery to get the air out but then I haven't had to add coolant sense I replaced the watter pump. Gurgling heater core isn't always the end of the world.

You know what though, the past 2 cars I have owned Consumer Reports and a lot of family members have said to stay away from. (2002 VW GTI 1.8T, and 2000 DII) Both of which have been great to me. However, you do need to just do the regular maintenance and drop in premium fuel. But with all that being said I was getting 30-32 MPG city in the GTI, and the Rover is running as clean, and strong as can be.
