I was reading in the Haynes manual that I will also need to remove the steering damper as well as the panhard rod (or another rod, I can't remember which). Is this really necessary, or will I have enough clearance by supporting the vehicle from the chassis and allowing the axle to hang down?
Thanks!
Thank you! The ticking at idle is another symptom I have noticed over the past month. Never heard it before and never associated it to the oil sludge issue. It seems like this is indeed the problem. How do I drop the oil pan? Is this difficult to remove and put back together? Will check the oil...
1996 SD with 156K miles.
Had the oil light stay on after starting the engine this afternoon-about 40F outside and car was sitting for 5+hours. It finally went away before I started driving, but this is the first time in the cars 15yr history I have seen this. While researching this forum I was...
According to the dealer, the vibrations were not related to the engine/MAFS...diagnosed as loose wheel bearings and worn u-joints. They said the u-joints were very worn and catching at times, causing the vibrations while the at idle at low speeds (in neutral). I'm picking up the vehicle later...
Thanks for all the advice and parts information-its going to the dealer tomorrow for a diagnosis & will let you know. Hopefully it's the MAF and I can replace it myself :D
The CEL does work and the problem started at 2-3K miles after I changed the plugs and wires, so probably not related. I did check to make sure all the wires were seated correctly. I hope it gets me to work this morning...however, don't want to damage anything further by driving it in this...
Will try it tomorrow...will there be codes even though there is no check engine light? I thought the light had to be on to retrieve the codes (according to the dealer...)
...glad I didn't tear it apart. I sprayed the sensor through the little hole, and it appears the truck is running even worse than before. Maybe it just didn't have time to completely dry? Not sure, but it is much worse. No check/service engine lights...
I will try and run the truck with the MAF...
Thank you for the info...the truck is running very rough now-much worse than before. Hope it is in fact the MAF sensor. I will contact one of the vendors for a cheaper unit-thanks again!
I'm trying to clean out the sensors in my MAF-1996 D1...How do I remove the sensor without without braking the MAF-doesn't seem to be a way to remove the part I need to clean. Can I just clean it as is, and spray the sensor with MAF cleaner through the little hole? Will this be as effective...

Need a little help...I have a 96 D1, 5-speed with 152,000mi. Two days ago I noticed that when I am slowing down to stop (car in neutral), the engine shudders for a few seconds, and then returns to idling normally. Never happens while I'm driving or on the gas, only in neutral when about to...
I've done an extensive search related to the p0125 code and the '96 disco but all the threads are a couple or years old. The check engine light on my '96 SD comes on intermittently every few months. Some days its on, some days it stays off. If I take it to the dealer they seem to replace the O2...
Thank You...found the plug-nice and loose of course. The code I received was P0125...with probable causes:
1. Coolant level low, checked this and fine.
2. Thermostat defective
3. ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor defective.
How do I know if it's #2 or #3? Is there any way to tell and are both...
