Engine shudders at idle

Need a little help...I have a 96 D1, 5-speed with 152,000mi. Two days ago I noticed that when I am slowing down to stop (car in neutral), the engine shudders for a few seconds, and then returns to idling normally. Never happens while I'm driving or on the gas, only in neutral when about to stop-very low speeds. The shuddering is not consistent, sometimes it will do it, sometimes it runs just fine. I noticed the RPMs were normal, I changed the plugs and wires recently and also changed the air filter.
Any ideas?...thanks in advance for your help!

My uneducated gut feeling is check the IACV. Does that year w/a 5 speed have a VSS? If so, that could be it.

Good luck with it.

msggunny...Thank you!! :patriot:
I will try and clean out the MAFS and hopefully not have to replace it. Looks expensive to replace-$1300?!

Go to Rovahfarm, Will Tillery, or PT Schram.

I know Rovahfarm has a new one for under $500.

I wouldnt spend more than the truck is worth on a sensor....

Do not spend 500 bucks... jesus...

2 options

1- buy a new after market one 69 bucks shipped to your door. I have used one of these and they work perfect, its the same exact thing. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LAND...l:Discovery&hash=item3cb749949f#ht_2694wt_938

2- Get a tested used unit from one of the vendors. Will Randy Paul and Marty will all give you a great deal and you will get a genuine part (50- 75 plus shipping or so).

Thank you for the info...the truck is running very rough now-much worse than before. Hope it is in fact the MAF sensor. I will contact one of the vendors for a cheaper unit-thanks again!

No prob, while its running disconnect the maf and see if it gets better. You should get your codes read at autozone or something (its free)

Will try it tomorrow...will there be codes even though there is no check engine light? I thought the light had to be on to retrieve the codes (according to the dealer...)

If the CEL isn't on you shouldnt have codes unless the bulb is burnt out. When you turn the truck on does the cel work? I read your other post. To clean the maf you are supposed to remove the maf and spray the filament in there (do not touch it, and do not take the maf apart) It might not even be related to the maf or even the engine... Did the problem start right after you did the wires?

The CEL does work and the problem started at 2-3K miles after I changed the plugs and wires, so probably not related. I did check to make sure all the wires were seated correctly. I hope it gets me to work this morning...however, don't want to damage anything further by driving it in this condition. Might have to take it to a local Rover mechanic (or dealer :ack: ) since I'm not that familiar with troubleshooting this issue. This disco has been practically trouble free for almost 16 years.
It's interesting/frustrating that the CEL has come on sometimes when I don't tighten the gas cap correctly, yet no lights when the engine feels like it's going to shake itself off of it's mounts!

I had a guy from the local Rover shop look at mine, he couldnt figure it out either. Used a T4 and reset everything with it. The issue went away for a miliseccond. Came right back.

Unless the guys there sleep, eat, and shit D1's i doubt they will do any better. Now a days the "tech's" just rely on what the computer tells them.

My guy did hint at the MAFS, but i initally ignored him because of no codes. My own stuborness cost me a few dollars in unneeded sensors.....

I know that game... As for the MAF, which seems to be the issue, Roverover (randy) has great prices and ships super fast. He just hooked me up with a great deal on a condenser fan and some other bits.

We're going through the same thing now on a '95 RRC it runs great except at idle. It throws a code 17 which is a TPS which we changed several times and tested it and everything is right.. flashed the ECU no code still shutters at idle. Put on an alternator, battery, ECU, MAF, wires, found a faulty vacuum advance changed it..no better, extremely frustrating
