Jimjet, which one do you think your shaft looks like?

well, i took advantage of the British Atlantic's recent sale and got mine from them for 360. Got tired of trying to find info on Durango's replacament. While i cant confirm that the one i got looks 100% identical to the one that was taken off my 01 D2 i think it looks very similar to the pic above "deeker's stock and
"Durango" replacement, only the one I got had a sticker EuroParts.com on it. As to Durango's one, if someone could confirm it fits and works (and where on earth they got it from) why bother with more expensive ones?
now I have to find a decent shaft shop in WDC area to fix mine, it was really getting close, boy am I glad i did this before it went.

Thanks Jim and Sven.

To specify: 659150 is not an OEM Dodge part # - it is a replacement/aftermarket part listed at the sites I linked.

According to rockauto.com, the 659150 is appropriate for the MY 2000 Durango and the 1999 and 2000 Dakota. This only applies to automatic transmission trucks (applies to all engines).

I wanna know who has wheeled and run one of these with their disco for say 10 or 20k miles

Hasn't jimjet run the Durango driveshaft on his Disco? I would like to know the specific part number for the Durango "propshaft" that fits on the 99 Disco II. And while I am making requests - it seems as though we need a separate thred or forum reserved to this front driveshaft "bitchslappen the tranny" issue. All Disco owners ought to get a rebate from LR for replacemnt of the driveshaft with a greasable version.

I exchanged a few emails with Cardone who makes 659150 this morning.

me said:
I would like some information about 659150. What make and model u-joints does it have installed? Are they serviceable? Can you send me a drawing with dimensions for the flanges and length? Thank you.

Cardone said:
David, thanks for your e-mail. The part number 65-9150 measures from center of u-joint to center of furthest u-joint collapsed is 24 1/2 ". The make of the u-joint is a spicer, part number 5-625, no service required. The flange measurements are, 2 5/8" pilot, holes from center to center are 2 7/8", the flange from face to center measures 1 15/16".

me said:
I was under the impression that 659150 had Spicer 1310 u-joints with zerk grease fittings so they could be serviced. Am I wrong? Do you have an alternate version that does have this setup? I am not interested in non-serviceable u joints.

Cardone said:
This is a non-service joint, this is all we have.

It appears that Jim and Deeker's shaft were custom built using a Durango "core" but are not an off-the-shelf item.

Interesting, spicer doesn't list a 5-625.
Neapco lists all Dodge 4WD front propshafts as taking the 1-0153 1310 series u-joint (=to the Spicer 5-153x)

I've been meaning to do this, so I might as well now. (might not actually happen until this weekend).
I have a spare DII propshaft. I'll get all the dimensional information off of it and provide Neapco (and maybe Spicer) part numbers for all the drive shaft components, including HD tubing material. This would be for 1310 u-joints.

edit: Corrected typo where I meant to say 5-625.

Just a little update.

1) The Durango shaft is holding up well.

2) Prior to making a road trip this past weekend i replaced the rear u-joint and rotoflex.
the parts cost me a fortune from L.R. but i needed (wanted ) to get it done.

The truck drives smoother than i can ever remember it since i owned it.
Not the slightest vibe anywhere.

so i guess im trying to say the rear should have been done at the same time as the front .

Im happy.

I just did the sane thing last week. Tough to beat that price and free shipping for a quality product. Wheeled it over the weekend no problem. After popping that baby in I was reminded of how smooth the DII can run. I have no idea how long the old shaft had been wobbling, but it was a long slow growing problem. The vibe got bad and then I heard the chirp and I was on the phone with Tom Woods himself as soon as I got home.

I'm in the same debate... TW or look into the Durango shaft option. From what I can tell from this thread:

  1. Only two members of Dweb run the Durango shaft and are happy with it - if more, please correct me
  2. Durango drive shafts in use were bought through L.I. Guys
  3. L.I. Guys modified the Cardone/Durango shafts by installing greaseable Spicers
  4. L.I. Guys with cost of shipping is close to TW in price
  5. Autozone, others, is $100 less than TW
Did we get any other confirmation that the shafts through the other sources come fitted with greaseable u-joints? Would be nice to save a $100+ v. TW and seeing that I don't have a monster lift, seems the Durango would be fine w. greaseable u-joints.

I've just managed to rebuild a stock DII shaft with GKN heavy duty greasable uni's and a new Hardy Spicer centre ball kit. I was going to get a TW but thought I'd have a go at rebuilding one my self. So, after a few weeks of trying to source the parts here in OZ, I finally got it together, cleaned and repainted all the bits then rebuilt the sucker. Install it tomorrow.

Here is a slide show of the rebuild:

Paranoia set in... I ordered a TW shaft today - Long Spline per his advice. Should ship tomorrow, I was impressed.

How do you suppose each shaft is tailored for varying dimensions or does a given shaft cover a range of dimensions? I didn't mess with taking my old one off to measure center face to center face... bottom to bottom measured 24 7/8" but went with 25" length as he said the top would measure longer... but also said an extra 1/8" is ok... as long as its within 1/2"

I have an OME now, HDs, so 2-3" range... I figured I may someday down the road go RTE 3"... wondering if others have a 3" RTE and what length DS you are running?

Is everyone happy with their TW drive shaft?

I installed mine today and the stock shaft is smoother... I get more highway vibration from the TWs shaft.... I may just get my stock one rebuilt and use the TW as a spare.

Anyone else experience the same?

My stock rebuilt one has been in for a couple of weeks now and it's all smooth sailing, but if I was in your neck of the woods i'd prob run a TW with a stocker as spare. Maybe it just needs a balance check. Are you sure it's the shaft giving the vibes ?

Cheers

George.

Yeah, first step next week is getting the balance checked at a local shop. I had the stock shaft in up until yesterday morning... I drove 70+mph all week long and no vibes with the stock shaft. Saturday morning I swapped in the TWs (I wish I had better tools it would make it sooo much easier time wise) drove over to play golf with some buddies, took the highway and vibes....

the only problem here is that the tubular driveshaft is going to warp under the heat of the catalytic converters- that is why there are solid driveshafts like mine. Of course, if you have gotten rid of the converters, who cares?
