Matt, Force Recon Diary is good. I'd send you mine, but apparently I already gave it away.

We Were Soldiers Once... And Young is a good read also.

I have some paperback autobiographies, mostly Marine Recon types that I'll send you if you want.

We Were Soldiers Once, as noted. For Self & Country, A Rumor of War, Steel My Soldier's Hearts, Hamburger Hill, Blue's Bastards, more to come. zillions at most book stores, so it is hard to weed through the sucky ones..

Are you looking for history or hype?
I have The Ten Thousand Day War and On Yankee Station.
The first follows the war from 1945 to 1975 and the second is a history of the naval air war.
If you would like them pm me your address.

Single best book, in my opinion, is Fields of Fire-depending on what you're looking for. It captures the essence of combat, leadership, etc in a way only a novel can.

Briggs's Back Yard
The Things They Carried

We Were Soldiers Once... And Young

Two great books. Had the pleasure of meeting and Gen Moore, awesome guy.

I could recommend a bunch of text type history books if you want I can dig up the info from old paper sources all of which had tons of good info, but not necessarily good reads.

Into the Mouth of the Cat is aight.

Yeah, one of the few positive things that has happened over the years. Meeting Bob Dole and Colin Powell were up there too. Shaking Rumsfeld's hand was pretty ballin'. But he had this creepy bandaid on and was way short in person.

where i'm at right now, duh...
I'm interested in learning more about about the war in general. It's not for school or anything like that, just for bedtime reading and what have you.

Dave, Walter, if those books are just collecting dust on your shelf I will gladly take them. I'm starting a little book shelf at my new place and it looks sad! I'll send you both my address.

I'll take down all the recommendations on here, and see what the local bookstores have.

thanks!

No problem Matt.
I used to work in a printing plant. I would watch the schedule for anything the Naval Institute Press was putting out, then snag one.
I've got about 40 books on WW2 as well as a few about Korea and WW1.
You'll like The Ten Thousand Day war. It throws Uncle Ho in a different light then what we are used to hearing. Basically, he just wanted the French out of his country and didn't care who helped him and yes, the United States was asked.
Viet Nam didn't have to be communist. The Viets hated China more then us.

Hell I'd say they still hate the Chinese a fair amount, and certainly gave them a nice bloody nose for their trouble in the late 70s.
"How we won the War" is a good, short, look at the Vietnamese perspective on the conflict-can basically be summed up with the intro's description of a conversation that was something like this "You know we never lost a battle with you" "Yes, and that's completely irrelevent."
