I wonder how well that steering set-up works???

Looks like the photo has been photo shopped...Or, has it just been blown up from a low res picture???

Anyway, looks like a 'street queen'. I wonder if the beadlocks are snap-on hub caps

What am I missing about the steering setup? or is that a trackrod, somehow up front?

I like the Steering link setup. I was considering doing that to mine. I was just worried that without a 5" lift, the links would hit each other when the drivers wheel stuffs and cause some serious problems. For now I guess I'll just have to live with this.

I just really don't like the look of 35's and beadlocks on a disco. I do like the tires though. All the rockbuggies in Moab are using them. I wish they made them in 34x10.50's.

Yes, the track and cross rod are up front.. You would also need to get a new swivel housing from the UK (right hand drive) that has the steering link connection on it. Sorry, not sure what the damn piece is actually called.. At least for most D1s.. Not sure about D2s. I was going to do that myself but, I had better things to spend money on at the time and I really don't need it. However, if you are looking to come up with some custom 3 link/4 link setup for the front it's one less thing in your way.

10-4 Eric, thanks, I have heard of that before. It'll be a while before I am concerned about that, but neat idea.

After replacing my steering rods and *still* needing to replace my bent trac bar, the last thing in the world I'd want it ALL the steering components in front of the axle. Way too vulnerable.

Huh. I have never even hit the drag link, but hammered the track rod a few times. I would love to get it up higher.

Up at Paragon my steering rod and trac bar both got wasted while doing this:
disco238.JPG

Angela was driving and she said she felt a bump (apparently the same rock that bashed in a 101FC's front diff too)- the steering was wasted and we had to bend it back as well as we could on the trail. It would only turn one way. The trac bar is still bent in to the point where I can't install my diff guard.

If anything, I'd rather have the steering gear behind the axle and up high like a.... er.... um... Freelander. :D

Problem is the track rod is only behind the axle, not even up.

I have heard good comments from people running the rockware trackrod, some here call it whoopty. I like the idea, but did not go with it because it is only offset over part of the rod and I have hit mine nearly everywhere.

Beware, once you bend that sucka back, its now rubber. The next time it will fold like a paper clip. Ask me how I know.

here's mine after we bent it as straight as we could- then drove home a couple hundred miles.

Been reading the last few posts and I have the same problem. I bent mine but not that bad. I am going to streighten out the rod the best I can then find a larger tube and sleeve the old one and weld the ends. Should be a strong and cheap fix.

Steve, so it bent back, just from the drive?

Kelly, it'll still bend, even the RTE stuff will bend (see the avatar below).

no- that's as straight as we could get it- and a big improvement. We were afraid to bend on it any more than that. The new one is OEM, but I plan to sleeve it when I redo the front end in the spring. At least this time I got the Bearmach ends- much better.

I've hit the stock trackrod on some rocks a few times rather hard, luckily the trackrod moved the rock instead of the rock moving the trackrod! luckily nothing like the pic above yet!

Ya, mine are RTE rods and with the help of my 12000 winch and 6000 + truck full of stuff I managed to bend it quite nicely.. :D I didn't bend it back.. i just bought two new ones.. One to put back on the truck and one to carry as a spare along with some spare tie rod ends. Even with that bend I was still able to adjust it so that my alignment was good and drove it home.. I like the RTE rods.. Good beefy stuff.. I'm sure I would have totally trashed anything else.. Most of the time the bar just hits things and nothing happens to it.. But, like every thing, if you get careless you can mess stuff up.

Man even if you adjusted as far out as possible, you were might toe out on the drive home.

I have had to hammer mine back from a bend "near" that twice. Then it was toast.

One trick... almost always you bend those suckers up. Take a bottle jack and wedge it between the bend and a strong part of the body/frame and jack it straight. Sometimes you have to bend a bit so- that you can get the jack in there.

Works for trailing links as well. Be careful to to put too much pressure on the joints/bushings.

Don't even try on HD stuff.
