Not sure if its repeat thread guys, but i m looking at a 32-40 inch HDTV, flat screen. Any personal experiences with those. Good and bad? Thinking Samsung or LG, unless there are other suggestions.

You must get something with 1080 if you want to be "future proof". 1080i should be fine for movies and TV, 1080p is better for playing video games.

If your room has lots of windows, get an LCD because the screen is less reflective. If it's a dark room, plasma is better because they have better contrast.

Those are the basics. Beyond that, it's how much you want to spend for the picture you like the best.

The Lou!
I started off with a 37" LG and loved it. It was a 720. It ended up having a bad plug so I exchanged it. They were out of the LG so I had to opt for another brand. I ended up with a Westinghouse 42" 1080P for the same price. It may be a so called "lower end" brand but so far I really love it. It has 4 hdmi ports, pc port and it auto selects the source when you switch the cable box on or the dvd player, etc. Which is great, it's one less remote control I have to pick up to change the input. Paid just under a grand for it and I wouldn't change a thing. Can't beat the price with that kind of resolution!

If you have the extra cash, and want to go top-of-line, I suggest the Sony XBRs. The XBR4 has a crazy contrast ratio, and equally crazy price...

For the bedroom, a plasma will likely suffice, and be good for most pr0n.

Go LCD, not plasma. As of my last research, if one of the plasma bulbs go out, you're basically screwed. Plasmas are lit by rows of little bulbs along the top and bottom of the screen. If one of the bulbs go out, you're stuck with a vertical blue line that is not repairable. LCD's however are lit with 3 bulbs, that are replacable. LCD's are brighter, and also feature the anti-glare screens. I'd wait a couple more months before buying one. The prices are expected to continue to drop. You can pick up a 1080p 42" LCD for around $2K. Sony's are rapidly dropping in price...and their quality, well, is easy to see! Phillips are also great. Most of your higher end equipment manufacturers use Phillips components...including bulbs, heat diffusers, and component video contrast and blend controller boards. Let me also advise you not to purchase at walmart, sams club, costco..or the like. if you need warranty work, you cant take it to the store...you'll have to ship it out on your own. I've had the best luck with Best Buy. Circut city always seems to be higher...but the staff know's their stuff, and post sale customer support is grerat.

Best of luck, hope this helps!

62" Panasonic DLP w/ 1080p was what we purchased. I intended to buy a plasma till I saw the life of the lamps and how much it was to replace them.

Ok..I stand corrected...Thanks Brian.. do you remember the aprox repair cost for a plasma bulb?

I did see a really nice Samsung 60" i wanna say, stupid nice picture, but the problem was it was 6k. A bit on the pricy side. I d say around 1k is reasonable for those, i dont think i m going plasma. Also any suggestions on slim line DVD players, since the TV is going on the wall and i d like to mount it next to it as well.

I've seen some SD ProScan and JVC models that are pretty narrow in front to back depth, maybe 8"-9", and maybe 1.25" top to bottom and standard (guess around 17-18") width. I've not looked into HD DVD or Blu-Ray units as of yet, which I'd assume you'd want. Check the sunday paper ads.

I've got a 42" Philips Plasma with Ambilight and love it. Picked it up about 2 years ago on super bargain-basement markdown (at the time) for about $1,300. I bought some super-duper warranty with it, so I'm not too worried about the bulbs. I haven't had any issues in over 2 years. The Ambilight is freak'n awesome too. It sounds gay, but it really is cool. At the time I did the research and got the 780 or 1080 whatever that was a good mix for both movie and gaming. When you get a wall mount, buy it off eBay. They wanted $95 bucks at BestBuy; I got mine for about $20 on eBay.

Also if you're in a metro area, get a Philips external HD antenna at WallyWorld. It was about $40 and worth every penny. Simple hook-up and I've got most of the big games in HD on my plasma w/o bending over for HD dish service. I mounted it inside my attic and it works great.

I got an HD DVD player, and i dont know if its just that one, its a Panasonic, but it takes a bit to read the DVD and it seems to stop once in a while. Anyone else have similar problems?

FWIW, I ended up with a DLP. Bang/buck 2 years ago was the reason. They're not suitable for wall mounting, obviously.

Is it still under wty? can you possibly exchange it?

I think you have a faulty unit! In operation, the HD DVD should be similar to the operation of a SD DVD, regardless the brand / mfg. Granted, there may be a bit more time needed to load all the data contained on a HD DVD/BR disc...but it shouldn't be a sigificant difference. My PS3 is my BR player..I've not noticed a difference in operation times between that and my sons' POS walmart $30 special DVD.

Some of those DLP's have damn nice picture!! And don't have the heat issues associated with an LCD or Plas. I've considered one of those, simply for the reason you stated...more bang for your buck!

HD DVD shouldn't stop, mine doesn't ever do that. Take it back, they owe you a new one. Now if it's stopping for a second or less in the middle of the movie, that's normal. It's something to do with the data files on the DVDs. They ALL do this with ALL of my movies, but no more frequently than that.
