The damn gas cap! Take off the damn gas cap. That would have saved me an hour and a half. Seemed like a lot of pressure even after I had de-pressurized the system. Then I thought of the gas cap!
I wish I was smarter.
I'm half way through thanks for the great write up.

Has anyone done something similar for the D2? Need to add a fuel filter since they don't ship with one... wonder what they're thinking with that, the crud in old fuel station and 3rd world fuel supplies is really not so injector friendly.

x2

D2 pump needs constant 50psi. So I would bet a 60psi pump may not work. If my pump goes this is what I'll think about doing.
Great info

Cheers

Boulder Bear thank you very much! Great write up and great timing! Cost was $110. For the pump, pump filter, fuel filter and fuel line. I bought clamps as well but they came with the pump. Didn't take too long. Wish I would have thought to take off the gas cap!

Hey ya'll! New to the site. Seems great! Well I have a '98 disco which was running fine. Tried to leave for work yesterday and wouldn't start. Turns over but seems to not be getting fuel. Symptoms seem to point towards fuel pump. Fuses are all fine. Can not hear anything from fuel pump when key is turned. I don't have gauges but manually tested at fuel bar and got not even a sputter. Are there any other checks I should make before diving into the fuel pump? Also does the pump in the above (spectacular) write up as good as going with the landrover one and save enough $ to be worth getting? I got my rover right before Katrina and this is the first major repair I have had to tackle.(Oh, first rover too.) All ya'll seem really helpful and knowledgable so I appreciate any tips or insight. Thanx!!

I have the same issue..truck wont start, i have battery and it turns over and all.. What kind of fuel pump sound can you hear when the key is turned?? when a fuel pump goes bad, does it go for good, or can it work sometimes and not others... the last few days my truck has started 1 times out of 5 and i have had to leave the truck overnight twice now and get a ride home.. HELLLLP!!!

Yes, sometimes, they will become intermittent before completely failing.

IF you stand at the loadspace door, you should be able to hear some noise coming from the center of the loadspace, or from beneath the truck. Worst case, pull up the carpet and remove the hatch and listen. Remember that the pump only runs a coupla seconds if the engine is not running.

This post saved me a lot of money. I got the 96 Impala (made in the US Carter) fuel pump from Napa. With the fuel line and clamps it came to about $114. Other than getting the gas lines off the old pump it was very easy to do. The truck would have no fuel pressure sometimes when it was warm and would not start. Now starts right up every time.

just to add to this

the E3240 and E3270 master pumps both have a small screen/pre-filter pressed into the fuel intake on the bottom of the pump.

The stock pump is exactly the same except it does not have the pressed in screen it uses a filter sock that is pressed onto the pump.

the filter sock is secured by a small metal ring that can easily be pryed off with a screw driver and installed on the Master pump.

I expierienced fuel starvation at wide open throttle above 4000 rpm with the screen in while using the filter sock. by removing the screen and running it with just the filter sock the pump is able to maintain the needed volume of fuel under full acceleration.

So when doing this swap using either the master E3240 or the master E3270 I recommend pulling the screen out on initial install.

I am new to this site, and am grateful that I stumbled across this thread. A fellow friend here put me on to it. Question before I go down to Napa tomorrow. Is there going to be a problem if my 98 DI has the evap loss system. I couldnt tell from the replies early on if it would or not. If anybody knows I would appreciate the green light before spending the money. I am a poor college student.

I just did the fuel pump replacement with the Airtex 3240. My old pump was bad for sure. Since my old pump was bad I figured this would surely remedy my problem. The truck died the other day while driving and I had to get it towed home.
Well it still won't start and I've repalced the fuel pump and filter. The pump appears to be pumping pleny of gas but it's barely making it to the fuel rail. I replaced the filter too.

Does anyone know what the cause could be....would the regulator be suspect?

It's a 1995 Land Rover discovery 3.9 L

I was putting it up for sale this week...the THIS happened!! GRRRRRRRR

Thanks

I wanted to link another replacement thread to this one to alert people to a very possible problem that can result from replacing the fuel pump.

on the top of the pump there are two studs that are powered and are directly where the hose clamp will go when connecting the inner fuel line to the pump.

If the clamp contacts the studs a spark could result and a spark in the fuel tank could explode the vapor in the tank if the fuel level is below that point in the tank.

Make sure to use a high pressure style fuel line clamp in this position and turn it so the clamp can not cotact the studs.

This is a real hazard and should be a important thing to watch for when replacing your own pump.

I just did the E3270 replacment in a Park & Ride lot on Friday. It only took one phone call to Thom for the parts number. I couldn't believe how easy it was to change out the pump!!!

I'd highly recommend reading the tech for future reference. Replacing the fuel pump is only a matter of time.

That reminds me, I really should do the through-the-tub (properly) mod for the Defender to make this a little easier to do, dropping an extended range tank to change a pump has got to suck.

FWIW, it shouldn't hurt to slide a short sleeve of shrink tubing over the hose clamp before it is installed.

A big thanks to Muskyman and Steve Rupp who had the part number memorized... And walked me through it over the phone since DWEB was down...

These instructions are spot on and couldn't be more straight forward.

Thank you Boulderbear! I replaced the fuel pump in my girlfriends 99 series I disco yesterday following your post. The only thing that was different was the fuel line size was 5/16. Thanks again it saved me a lot of $$$
