It is my personal opinion, based on no scientific evidence, that Dexcool is part of the reason for head gasket failures on DII's. If you have ever seen a failed head gasket on a DII then you have probably seen where the gasket material seems to have been eaten away on the outside of the cooling jackets. ...
Once again all of this is based on experience and speculation, not fact or scientific evidence.

In my recent HG job my gaskets were in perfect shape BUT eaten away on the outside of the cooling jackets. Running Texaco (same as Dexcool). System was flushed and replenished every now and then because of rad failure (gaskets eaten) and hose failure 2 years later.

There is another problem with coolants. No matter which brand you buy or look at, no one of them will have the magic letters (IAT, OAT or HOAT) written on them, then simply will write down some specification or type approval for manufacturers, but some times it's useless, as only the magic letters will do.

I need some IAT for my 300 Tdi Range Classic and will try to avoid Dex cool in my D2 in 2 years time when it's due for flushing.
Don't you find funny that LR states dex cool for the D2 but the "special blend ethylene glycol" for D1s and RRClassics if the block and HG are the same type and only the rad build type is changed?

The more I read about coolants, the more confused I am.
Happy wednesday to everyone

I have G05 in everything I own except the Toy 4runner. Just don't have it in there yet since I just got the thing a little while ago and the coolant is in good shape.

Maybe it's not a good thing..... but in my research it was the best idea I found. I have it in a Jag, a VW,a Audi, a BMW Mini, a 1961 International, an Austin Mini, my boat, my tractor and a few customers and families cars/trucks.

Hell I even drink the stuff when I run of Gatorade.

EDIT: Mostly I decided to switch some of them over just to keep things simple - not because I really felt it was needed - Maybe, maybe not.

I'm probably not on top of this but I thought the entire reason for Dexcool was that it was supposed to last forever. Just my perception.

As far as EPA rules for antifreeze at the wrecking yard I've never had the county tell me we need some fancy machine to capture and store it. They were on my ass about an AC recovery machine years ago(which we bought).

Believe me if the state or county could shut me down or find a reason to fine me for not being complient--THEY FUCKING WOULD-

Plus Snap-On would be promoting such a machine if they knew we had to have one.

I've run only Toyota red coolant in EVERYTHING I have owned for the past 9 years. Even on my Rovers, after fixing what leaks exist, flushing the system, and filling with 50/50 Toyota red and distilled H2O I've never had an overheat or repeat coolant leak.

Now that this thread has been resurrected I'd like to add another interesting observation. On two of the trucks I've done head gaskets on and put in green coolant the radiators have all started leaking worse than before. Most DII radiators that I see leaking don't need a replacement since they just seep, but with the green coolant they leak. I think this is due to the fact that the green coolant doesn't congeal like dexcool does.
