If it is legally registered to you in your country of origin, and you bring it in, it is considered legal. I almost bought one that was brought here by a Brit family, the tranny went out while they were driving it through Oregon, so instead of paying to have it fixed, then paying to have it shipped back to England with them at the end of the year, they just sold it. It was titled and licensed in Oregon. I believe there is a time limit for U.S. citizens also, and military -- if you have it in your name in the country you are living in for some certain period of time, then you can bring it in.
The restrictions are still costly, but not nearly as costly as doing it with a R.I.
The story behind the 110 Camel in the photos was something along the lines of the original owner went to where it was, brought it in, fought a very long battle with California to get it legalized, won, sold it a while later, and since then it has been babied by the owner like a museum piece (which it is). Ron bought it on Thursday, he drove it down to Portland and met me on Friday morning, we caravaned down to meet the rest of the group.
