I have probably been consulting this board for about two years and finally with some help from guys on this board and excelent work from my buddy at Autocare my cold starting problems are finally over.
Problem started about two years ago in extreme cold weather ( -20 to - 30 degrees celsius ). The truck would crank and crank without ever firing. Last year I started with the battery and new plugs, rotor, cap and wires. It seemed to help but it was not great. This year it just got worse it cranked and flooded and would not start. I almost thought that this was it for me and the Disco. I couldn't stand seeing a guy with a diesel land criuser start in the employee parking lot where I work and me with my boosting cables. I was now determined, I called Bruno who is a great friend of mine and the one who intoduced me to the Land Rover product 6 years ago. Bruno and I go way back in high school. I have known him for about 20 years and he has 4 independant service/repair stations, 3 in Montreal, Canada and 1 in Hollywood Florida USA. He owns a classic Range Rover 92, a 1984 diesel 90 and a 1998 Range Rover. If he could not fix it, no one could. He had the truck for a week and he worked on it patiently and the problem was finally solved. He kept it for a few extra days to run tests during our deep freeze last week and it started every time.
Repairs done:
Replaced prom in the ECU
changed starter to high speed starter
changed all battery leads
Timing was done
checked all grounds
regapped plugs
5w30 semi synthetic oil change
and fixed a whole bunch of things not related to the starting problem. I kicked of my diff lock lever after it got jammed. I was little angry. He disassembled lubbed and rewelded the lever it moves better then when I first got the truck 5 years ago.
