The Wife would love to have a Range Rover. Were looking at 04' to 05' model years with about 30-35k miles on them. Here is my question, I have an 04' Disco and know all about the common probelms that can happen, knock on wood my have all been under warrenty so far. So what are the problems common to the Range Rover?

From a few threads down..

I don't own one, have a friend with one, he doesn't have many problems with his '04, they had an '03 as well, seems they had a handful of issues with that one, but hey, it's a Rover. My wife's '06 LR3 has already been to the shop 4 times in three months, but nothing serious at all, just nit-picky stuff.

The 04-07 Models Were Better Than The 03 There Were Some Quirks That Got Worked Out From 03-04. Although 04 And 05 Still Have The Splined Front Diff Driveshaft Problems. ( Search For That And Read Up On It) But There Is A Good Replacement Fix For That ( See Rangerovers.net) Lots Of Good Info There Too!

Good Luck And The "new" Range Rovers Are A World From The Old P38 Imho!

The "new" (2003 +) Range is a fantastic vehicle, in looks and in performance. The BMW 4.4 engine is miles ahead of anything LR have had previously in performance and in reliability. I had a 2000 Disco II (4.0) and there is just no comparison.
Most people comment highly on the updated NAVsystem available in the 2005 +. but many upgrade their NAV on the '03-04.
As mentioned previously there is the front driveshaft problem but there is an aftermarket fix for that. But even if you get that a continuing warranty is highly recommended, as there are little things (like Park Distance Contol) that can go wrong, and bigger things I am sure as well.
See rangerovers.net forum for lots of info.
The passenger accomodation is so luxurious compared even to the disco, and there is more passenger room. The luggage area is not as tall and because of the tailgate being at a higher position if you have a medium sized dog he will have more difficulty jumping in than into a Disco or LR3.
Sometimes I miss the seven seats in the Disco, and the roof ladder, which is not available.
I would be wary of the Range from 2006 on as it has a new Jaguar engine and although it produces a little more power its reliability is not yet established as compared with the BMW unit.

Enjoy your new ride.

This is not entirely true. The Jag motor has been in jags for years now. It has some oil leak problems from the cam covers but not really abundant. LR made some improvments for offroad and also for being in and suv instead of a car but I've seen no problems yet with any of the Jag motors in our LR's.

good luck with your purchase

That's good to hear, although I have read a few reports on rangerovers.net of serious oil leak problems with a few individual motors in the '06 and '07 Range. Sounds like factory quality control problems rather than design issues, but that is small comfort if it affects you. Usually however these have appeared on new cars, and by the time I get around to looking at an 06-07 Range they will be anything but new.

These are the sort of crs you buy NEW......coz unless you got the most generious and longest warranty possible anything that goes wrong has the potential tpo be financially crippling - unless your wealthy, in which case you would be asking this Q, you'd be buying a brand new one!.......

......I bought my P38a new and even though I wanted another one alongside, I went for another Disco coz they were less coimplex........I KNOW that MY P38a is good and has been serviced without a thought for money according to all schedules, but you MUST realise that unless you've known a car from new you don't know what can eventuate that is already incipient!
