Newbie question alert

I Have some cash and was thinking of buying a hi-lift with a couple other accessories. This would act as my recovery gear because right now I don't have anything but tow points.

or

Wait 3-4 months for some more cash and buy a winch.

Can a Hi-lift be used as quality recovery gear?

With a skilled operator, a hi-lift can do amazing things. I've seen a hi-lift used to recover a vehicle after multiple failed winch attempts. I must admit that since I installed my winch, I haven't used my hi-lift even once.

Well, with a winch, your going to need a bumper too, unless you have that covered....A hi-lift will work, I guess, but don't rely on it. I would get a Jate ring or two, and a good tow strap first. Then, maybe the hi-lift.

Your long term plan should definately include a winch. But as previously mentioned you'll also need a bumper, a fairlead, etc.

I am a huge fan of the hi-lift & carry one at all times for a jack, obviously, but also as a back up to my winch

wow, thats a big price difference, between a winch and hi-lift... I would think that if you have the budgeted money for a winch, going to your local tractor supply or northern tool and picking up a 50 dollar hi-lift shouldnt be that big of an issue! Just a thought.

*edit* Im an idiot and cant read!!! I would probably get a hi-lift now, if you plan on wheeling between now and the time you can afford a winch. *edit*

Oh yeah, also you'll want to get the 'winching kit' for the hi-lift which is not very expensive. Bottom line is you should have both as you'll have uses for a jack in a situation where a winch doesn't help you,,,and vice-versa

Sometimes you need both, Buy the jack now and get the winch later.

I recovered a grand cherokee that was highcentered on the front pinion in a foot of water and another foot of mud. The kid had no idea what was going on, I had him stack rocks under the tire that I lifted (using the wheel lift kit) and then put it back down and did an angle pull with a block back to my truck to get him out of the muck.

All the while his moron buddies are sitting up the hill watching me do the work, thats what I get for going out with a bunch of 21 yr old redneck jeepers. :(

450?

Did you call to get the $450? I can't find anywhere on the BBS that references the price.

The guys on Pirate seem to be horny about this winch, but I don't remember reading too much about these. Wouldn't be the first time I haven't paid attention.

What is so special (other than the price) about T-max?

I don't know anything about 'em, can't give a recommend on the seller or the winch,,just figured it was worth looking into for those in the market 'cause $450 is CHEAP. Send him a PM & he'll give you the info

3 buddies of mine have the T-max - I was VERY impressed...one has the 12K LBS one and it pulled steady without any issues...

Then again, my M8274-50 did that much faster, with more rope & with that sexy "click-click" sound :) (to add to the ARB psst psst sounds :))
