lookin for part #'s and brands please. i assume that you can get them from summit. also what lifters to get.

i am going from a 3.9 to a 4.6 in a disco that will be used to tow atv's in the mts in cali and NM, so low end torque is a priority as is a smooth idle.

thx

I know its here in Australia but Tighe cams in Brisbane have some good ones. Dean would send you one or at least you could get the timing of one of his and get something similar. All the details are under range rover on his web site.
You want his 300at or 310 grind.

Don't waste your time with Summit. Call Mark at D&D fab. He knows his shit, and knows what works. 810-798-2491 www.aluminumv8.com

A rover cam is NOT cheap. Be prepared to drop 450.00 bucks on everything, cam, lifters, timing chain set......Mark deals in Crower cams. I just got the 260*, should be good for low torque from about 1200 to about 3500. It's not a hot rod cam, but should be good for a Daily Driver.

New push rods are 4.00 each

Be sure to have your heads gone over too.

If you think $450 is expensive, price an OEM Rover cam, drive, lifters. For that matter, price just about any other high performance cam.

Maybe I should read word it....

Compaired to a Small Block Chevy, the Rover cams are very expensive. 450.00 was on the low end. Some cams were as much as 800.00 for the cam only.

will this timing chain work under a 3.9 cover on a 4.6 block? are the cam and lifters specified suited for the 4.6?

I'm not sure what Peter is building, so I can't say if it will work of not.

But, Tradin1, no the 3.9 cover will not suit you on the 4.6. you need a 4.2L front cover I believe, along with a 4.2> harmonic balancer.

Don't skimp man, just call D&D, he has done ALL the homework. 30 years of experence is worth the extra $58 bucks. That way you know it's right the first time. Plus, that cam Peter is getting is pretty mild. It's only a 246*....You can do better than that, and still have a smooth idle and a broader power range.

D I am building a 3.9 for low end grunt. I want off idle power too 4000 rpms. This is a manual trans and I belive this setup offers better lugging ability. I am not a fan high lift you will lose vacum. I know this cam has been installed in 4.6's & will work with some mods. I thought I would pass along what I am doing & some options. You are correct on the front cover as 4.6 covers have no hole for the dist. I decided to keep my 3.9 because I have low miles & saved the money for a suspension overhaul.
It is a good idea to consult advice & D&D does know there stuff. I am not knocking them!!
Nor am I knocking anyones knowledge or ability!

Peter,
I'm guessing here, but with that cam, are you not using a thrust plate?

Neither the Cloyes of the JP double roller timing sets will fit under the stock 3.9 B front cover (we tried), so you're stuck with the stock timing gear unless you can make some modification of the front cover.

Check out Piper cams in the UK. I'm running a RP4 in my 4.6, which seems to give some low-end oomph.

for 450$ (without labor charges) you can get a whole new 4.6 (with wiring) in Lebanon :)...no cams for me, unless there is an "l" in the 2nd position, then I'll have white wine to go...

Anyways, interested to know what is the "best set-up for the buck!"

Your correct here, a cam with 260* duration work well in these engines. I've used a Tighe 300AT lotts of times here in Oz and it will give a significant torque increase, normally means the car will stay in one gear higher on most inclines on road. This cam has 260* and 415 thou of lift,It will idle fine, Dean also has one called 310 with 268* and 450 thou lift this is a great road cam and gives good highway performance. Ivan Tighe and his family are one of the original cam grinders here in Oz along with Waggot, kind of like Isky in the US I guess. Dean has a good bit of camshaft theroy on his website for anyone who is inrested, see the link in my post above.
