Does anyone know what it could be? I'm going to check out the driveshaft U-joints think I'm going in the right direction? This is on a 1997 Disco 1 automatic with 105k on it, it has a 3" lift on it too...

Depends. Could be a worn tail shaft from the AT.

There was a problem with output shafts wearing but that was solved about 94 by cross drilling the shaft to allow oil through it.....97's don't get that.....I suppose you need to hear the noise and compare it with other LR's, but like I said before, sounds like every other LR!!!!

its the fletser valves...nothing to worry about

You will need a set of pliers, some thirty weight oil and ball bearings to fix this

I have the similar sound with my rover. Some posts are saying this isn't a problem and some are saying it is? I haven't had any issues with my truck and its been doing this the whole time I've owned it. So is this a problem or not?

mine clunks too, check the ujoint on you drive shaft. mine wore out and swung my front drive shaft right into my transmission and put a fat hole in my tranny and wallet. after replacing all of that it still clunks. but now only when im facing uphill and put it in reverse. the tech said check your u-joint if its fine then dont worry about it, its normal. oh i have an 01 dII

u joint failure is unrealted to the normal clunk of these transmissions.

shift into neutral just as you stop. put it in park. then the next time you put in d or r the clunk is gone.[provided you arn't on a hill]
it works

X2
......and every RR Classic and every P38a I've ever owned or driven or had a ride in!!

.......and every Series, but you don't notice it in them cause of all the other noise!!!

Remember most cars have 1 X gear box and 1 X diff and 1 X prop shaft......a LR has 2 X gearboxes, 3 X diffs, 2 X propshafts....etc ALL with a lil' bit of freeplay - and it ALL adds up to clunking that is also present in all other regular cars......bvut this is multiplied by the factors above!

The clunk lets you know its working...

Mine does it from time to time - I found that if I stop @ neutral for a moment between selecting, then no clunk.

Turn the radio up... it"ll drown out almost anything

have the u joints and pinion bearings checked, assuming all that is fine its not unusual. dont sweat it, take an extra split second and shift a little more gently and see if that helps. otherwise, get used to it.
