Hey gang -

I have a 2000 Disco 2 with about 83,000 on the clock. Over the last few weeks it has developed an intermittent hesitation/jerking that I notice mainly at higher 40-50+ speeds.

I first noticed it a couple weeks ago on the freeway at about 70 mph: it felt like the engine was stopping for like a quarter second - just enough to give it a little bit of a lurch. It did this for a minute or so (my wife even noticed) and then stopped. It did that a few times in the week before and has been doing it off and on since.

No discernible pattern in terms of vehicle speed (I think I just *notice* it more at higher speeds), hot or cold engine or anything else I can think of.

The vehicle has been well maintained - full 60k with new transmission filter & fluid about 3 years ago. I did basically another 60k service last summer with all new fluids and filters again (at about 80k miles).

All fluids are topped up, no check engine lights, no flashing M & S lights and no codes either. I am pretty stumped.

I am having my mechanic replace the valve cover gaskets this weekend and asked him to take a drive in it and see what he thinks. Thought I'd try the braintrust here too.

If it were engine related, I would expect to see a code, same for transmission problems. Any other ideas that wouldn't show up in the ECU?

Thanks gang!

How old are the wires and plugs?

Plugs & wires new at the 60k service....hmmm....i *might* have replaced the plugs last summer as well. Darned if I can recall.

At the most they have 3 years & about 20k miles on them.

Do the Disco IIs have Vehicle Speed Sensors? That was one of my first thoughts but I presume there would be a code...

My 2000 started doing the same thing a year ago. I played with a couple of things and could'nt figure it out. Then one rainy day the CEL came on with a misfire code. I changed plugs and wires and see ya, all was good. The computer will have a pending code for a while and then after a length of time it fires an error code. Rover wires are known to be cheesy so swap them out with a good set. I bought plugs and wires from Ngk at NGK.com, they sell a wire set for under $50 if you don't mind blue. If you have small hands they're a pita to change, if you have big hands ask a friend with small hands to help you. Good luck!
