I guess I will have to give in and pull the console. I will also go ahead and buy a rivet gun and try to replace things as they were. I hope I dont have to pull the t-case out, as that would be a huge pita!

Just to clarify my earlier post, I did NOT remove the console.

ok. as i am typing this on the hood of my '99 D1, i have torn the centre consol out of the '96. was not bad at all. took maybe 20 mins. i took off both access panels......the one under the CDL level and the one under the transmission shifter.
this thing seems to be really screwed up. for one they did not put the bolt back in the lower arm that attaches to the LOCK lever. so this will not allow the truck to switch from LOCK to UNLOCK.
LOCK would be to the far left on the shifter, but what position would that be on the t-case itself? right now as the truck sits it is running parallel to the t-case or vertical. but the lever is actually in the LOW and UNLOCKED position. but the car is definitely in HIGH and LOCKED. haha. oh this will be interesting.
and there is no light on the dash that says that truck is LOCKED. but it sure drives like it is.....binding up on sharp turns on the gravel drive. and yes the light and buzzer are working. they were going off and on when i was messing with all this.
but i think what i need to know are the positions of the levers on the t-case. so that i can set them and then reconnect the linkages from there.

that piece is there. the piece that is missing is the bolt that attaches that arm just below where it attaches at the top of that.
it needs to attach at both points in order to have enough leverage to move the diff lock back and forth.
with a pry bar i moved the diff lock on the t-case over to the right. that is the UNLOCKED position. drove the truck around a little and seems to drive ok.
least i can access all the linkage now quite easily.
just need to get a small nut and bolt and then make sure i have the linkage connected while the conntections on the t-case are the same.

I ended up yaking the console out. not a bad job. took out the whole mechanism, into a bench vice and used a center punch to free it up. Then reintalled and filled the whole void with grease. Used stainless sheet metal screws to close everything up. Man, what a huge difference in traction. For instance, I used to try and go up this very short but very steep dirt hill. Without cdl working, I would get to where the weight left the front wheels, and would spin and sit.

With diff locked now, I tried the same thing on a wet day, stopped half way up, and pulled away up the hill without a bit of spin. Unbellievable. The angle of this hill is no joke about 30 degrees, and is covered with some embedded rocks. I can only imagine one of these with a little lift, some 33s, and locking diffs. They would be unstoppable!
