Can you get access to the cdl shift mechanism on a 98 disco 1 to free up and grease without pulling the whole center console?

Thanks,

Kieran

You do have to dril out rivits. Bolt it back down with stainless sheet metal screws. It isn't that bad.

ok. but if it is that bad i am coming down to St. Lou and making you walk around East St. Louis with a thong and bottle of Thunderbird in hand.

once it gets above 40 degrees i am heading out to try this on the 1996. some shop in town was doing warranty work on the truck and didn't get the linkage in right. damn thing is in 4 low when it should be in 4 high. all screwed up. time for drilling.

Average tempreture in Tweed Ontario is 16f and im outside dismantling with the occasional luxury of the unheated 1500 sqft shop on a concrete floor with a propane bottle facing upwards to help the shop lights ignite!

ha 40 degrees is a Canuk summer lol

I took the knob/gaiter off mine and then slipped the straw of the spray lube can down next to the cdl lever. I sprayed with with two kinds of penetrating lube and also reached up from underneath and sprayed a bunch more. No luck freeing it up that day, but days later I finally did. One product that I used is Fluidfilm which seems to work great on rusty stuff.

maybe if you'd move all those damn cars out of the shop you would have room for a big ass heater and mini bar! :)

i was working on a few of my trucks earlier in the winter in 20 degree temps on my back for hours on end. it was miserable work. no more. i will wait til it hits 40 or be indoors.

Take it apart!

The only thing I did in two days of muscling and spraying my cdl was waste my time, and stress the linkage. I finally took it completly out. I then put it in a bench vise, used a center punch and a sledge hammer to free the sliding pin up. I should have gone straight to pulling it out.

I guess I will have to give in and pull the console. I will also go ahead and buy a rivet gun and try to replace things as they were. I hope I dont have to pull the t-case out, as that would be a huge pita!
