Wanted to top up the transfer case oil today on my DII - and had read many reports here about the access to the filler plug being tight and challenging.

Well, they are right!

However, a Craftsman 1/2" drive UJ, coupled to a 5" extension bar, allowed me to use my socket wrench easily, and have the plug out in seconds.

The UJ fits into the 1/2" port on the plug, and the extension bar allows enough access to get the socket wrench on to the extension, and undo the plug.

Cheap oil pump (like a huge soap dispenser) fitted staright on to a std bottle of Mobil1 75w90, and the tube was plenty long enough for easy pumping into the case.

Everything was available from local stores for a few bucks - nothing like as bad as I had figured :D

I did mine this weekend too. Used a similar setup, it was easy. Except I missed my catch can and spilt oil all over the floor of my garage. What gear oil did you use in the t-case? Did you drain and refill? I have talked to a former LRNA engineer on another forum and he suggested use the very best in the t-case. There were t-case lubrication problems experienced earlier in the D1s and RRCs. He didn't know if the D2 had the same issue(he retired), but just to be safe, use the best.

By the way, he also said that the diffs are not really subject to any lubricating issues and that any 75W90 gear oil will be fine.

I used the same for all of my diffs and t-case: Lubro Moly 75W90 VollSynthese. Full synthetic, made in Germany. I was amazed, the stuff is absolutely clear, like syrup, but clear.

I used Mobil1 75w90 full synthetic - always trusted Mobil1 :)

This time it was just a refil - full fluid exchange is in 4000 miles at 60k

I use the same in the diffs - great stuff!

Feels very thin compared to regular Mobil1 engine oil - but then it's supposed to be.
