I recently got a 96 Disco and I'm trying to fix minor issues the truck has.

Every time I use the signal lights, the green trailer icon in the dashboard lights-ups.

First question, is this normal?

I took the AB hitch wiring kit to see if the kit was bad...

I removed all the bulbs and checked the connections, to see if a wire was brittle/loose and going to ground...

...no luck

any ideas

Do you have an aftermarket front bumper with turn signals? My truck has done what you describe ever since I replaced the stock front bumper with an ARB that has its own turn signals. My guess is that the trailer turn signal indicator is triggered by additional resistance on the turn signal circuit caused by the extra turn signals now on my truck. The computer sees the extra load and assumes you have a trailer connected. I wouldn't worry about it if the signals you want and need work okay.

It makes a lot of sense what you are saying. The ECU probably has a Ohms value to sense the trailer kit.

Yes, it has an ARB with turn signals.

In addition to that, I saw 2 connectors hanging from the vehicle on each side. One is very close to the lamps (white). The other has a longer lead and I was able to find out it's for the fog lights (which I don't have).

It is better to have the warning light working correctly, as you'll not know if your trailer indicator lights are working or not.

It's a legal requirement in Europe to have indication that the turn signals are working on the trailer, independently of the usual car indicator repeater light. I don't know if that is the same in the USA.

You may find that it is simply a faulty flasher unit.

Use a lower wattage bulb... When I went with an aftermarket bumper on my DII, I had the same issue. I went with a 5 watt (IIRC) turn signal bulb and it fixed the issue.
