Im thinking of doing a suspension and tire up grade on my 87 Range Rover and was wondering how big of tire I can go without replacing the gears. and How tall of a suspension lift can I go with out having to do tons of other modifications?? Any advice??

some guys can do 3" lifts w/o any vibs but some have problems with it. 2" should not be any problem though. RTE, OME, or Big Blue are some of the basic options with springs. Gears are nice with anything over a 31 inch tire in my opinion, but that 3.5 is already very low on horsepower. It will make climbing hills much more work either way. I would probably go either 245/75 or if you want to push it up to 32 then 235/85. Either way you are going to notice a loss in power.

So if I were to go with the 245/75 or 235/85 and a 2'' lift would the tires rub?? How much would new gears cost and could I do this my self?

The 245s would probably require you to 'fold" the lip inside the rear fender wheel. Easy and impossible to notice. Depends on the make of tire some need this some dont. It is only needed during full flex when the tire tries to stuff into the wheel well. The front would probably require bump stop adjustments for both tires but nothing else. Ive never ran the 235s but I would not think any trimming would be needed. If so very minor.
The gears can be done yourself if your pretty handy with a wrench. You will need some special tools (dial indicator, press, etc). I would get the tires you want and see what you think. I got 4.1s in my 89RRC and they do add some power back but Im running 33.3 inch tires. The higher you go the more power you lose but the more clearance you gain! Some of the guys down here run 34s with stock gears but it is flat in FL! Gordo
