Will be out next month- Garmin 376C

It auto-routes like the StreetPilot, same size and shape as the popular 276C. Can run topo or CitySelect software and get this- built in XM Weather receiver! If you subscribe to the service for $29-$50 a month, you can get near real time weather (NexRad radar, wind speed, ocean conditions, hurricane and storm tracks) on the display- and XM radio stations with an audio ouput. Kinda pricey at $999 suggested retail, but I've already pre-purchased one for $850. I'll share the source if anyone else wants one.

$1000 bucks ehhh.....try $2600 for one I'm lusting after. :(

Somehow $2600 doesn't seem unreasonable for "(NEXRAD), Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs), Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs), Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), Lightning and Winds Aloft, and several other important weather products".

Oh and optional XM radio tunes in my headset, me likey.

Compared to an in-dash mounted Garmin Stack, $2600 is nothing. Ian do you own a plane? I'd split the gas money to go flying with ya.

Ya know what? They are ALMOST the same GPS except that the aviation version has a jacked up price because of product liability. You can subscribe to the aviation version of the weather service on the 376C as well- but the operating system of the 376C has different menus etc that are actually intended for a boat. You *could* get the cheaper 376C and run it in a plane, it just might not have some of the pilot-geek specific stuff. Hell, I have been using a regular handheld Garmin in the plane for years. The Mooney I usually borrow from a friend has an old monochrome StreetPilot in it. :D

The cheapest wx package has the Nexrad, ground level winds and other simple stuff. Winds aloft would be nice though.

i haven read thru it yet and this might be splitting hairs. but i have also wanted live weather maps on my GPS, but i also want to show my location within that weather map. with my breadcrumb trail. so i can see right were i am in relation to the weather.

garrett you cheap fuck i thought you had a 176 and it's non color screen...

Rob- yup, it still shows your location etc. It just overlays the weather graphics. I noticed on one that I played with in a friend's boat, the nexrad resolution when you zoom in fairly close isn't great. It gets really blocky looking, but still usable.

Yeah a nice Garmin stack would run what like 15-20 grand minimum. I wish I had a plane of my own at the moment. I've been saving up for at least a share in one. I don't fly that much anymore since I gave up trying to fly for a living anytime soon. My friends in the regionals persuaded me not to follow in their footsteps. Anyways, when I do fly I rent out of either Spirit of St. Louis or St. Charles. St. Charles Flying service is cheaper than Skyline over at Spirit but you get what you pay for. Even their brand new Cessnas with Bendix King stacks don't have nexrad service so the Garmin would help greatly when trying to pick my way through midwest storm cells.
