Sorry guys and girls.

I trudged through the old D-web threads but could not sort the trees from the woods.

Problem
.

1. Serpentine belt snapped> took out lower Rad' piping.

2. Replaced afformentioned parts.

3. Started engine observed fan pulley 'jiggle' then appear to seize.

4. Replaced afformentioned part.

5. Drained and rplaced fluids, started disco temp reading normal at idle. Drove disco 500-700 yds and the temp shot to Red line.

6. Replaced Thermostat replaced fluids and tried again. Same story engine at idle 'normal' temp reading. 500-700 yd drive and temp guage shoots to Red Line.

So what am I doing wrong. I installed everything following the 'Rave Cd' and loads of previous D-webs threads advice.

The top hose to thermostat gets very hot and appeared under real pressure the last time. ie could not squeeze the hose at all. I did not let the beast run for about 20-30 mins at idle with the water tank lid off, could this be a problem. When expansion tank gets to hot it makes strange clacking sounds. When the engine is cooler I can squeeze the top hose (too thermo') and it makes bubble sounds in the expansion tank. Same with the Lower hose.

The beast is a 1995 D-1 3.9 has any one any suggestions other than sell it for spares (kidding).

Ladies & gentleman your help in advance is always appreciated. This time more than ever as we have snow forecast for tomorrow and I wish no longer to drive the wifes Nissan Murano.

Cheers

May be an airlock. Bleed (fill) thru the top screw plug with front slightly higher than rear,

Bad T-Stat or Airlock

Nomad,

I just went through a similar problem. I replaced my serp belt, radiator and hoses. I had the dreaded waterfall behind the dash and new I wasn't getting full circulation. Although I have a DII I was convinced I had an airlock. Try it again! and turn the heat up on high. Let it run 20-30 minutes. I followed all the advice in here and nothing worked. I determined my new t-stat from the dealer  was the problem. 40 bucks down the drain. I purchased another one from AB, 15 bucks :D and poof. It still took a good 20-30 minutes driving around before all the air left. I let it cool down and topped it off a couple times and she's fine. I had the rare bumm T-Stat purchase. As long as you idle you can go into the red. I'd start the process over, cap off and run it. I've pasted an article I found on rovers north that may help. Good Luck

I took the stealership t-stat back for a full refund. What was I thinking?

Jay.

Thank you for the return thread.

I replaced the thermo with a original thermo from LR. Let it run on idle for 30+ min nothing. Continued to let it run at idle until the non antifreeze smelling smoke arrived. stopped the engine smell was intolerable. Tried to restart with a truck load of Pistonslapping sound. I let it cool for sometime. I will shoot down to Oriellys parts store today and grab a new thermo. Mine may have been a dud LR part and i'll try again.

Cheers for the help.

The top hose is getting super hot, but seems to carry no water!

Here is the problem I had, sounds the same.
Major blockage in the radiator that caused the top of the radiator to be much hotter than the bottom, mine was a 105 deg diff. This caused the fan clutch not to kick on because the oil in it wouldn't heat up properly, therefore causing the engine to heat up. Take the temp on the top and then the bottom of the radiator, best done with a laser thermometer. If you have a major difference rev the engine up and listen for the fan clutch to engage. Chances are it won't. Fix is to have the radiator cored out and check out the fan clutch. It has some type of oil in it, not replacable oil, have to replace fan clutch.

hope this helps,

double check that you didn't install the thermo backwards... pull the thermo out & see if problem goes away. what shape is your water pump in? has it been changed?

Ed, hey there.

Brand new pump from R' connection this week. New hoses and new serpentine belt. Will be checking the Thermo and replacing with an after market one hopefully tomorrow if the temp climbs above 1-5 oF.

Found it so strange tht all the sh%t hit the fan in one go. no heating probs until the air bleed attempts.

cheers

the bum thermostat purchase (in my experience)seems to happen quite often anymore. for last 5 yrs i have got into habit of checking in a boiling pot of water before putting in.
