Stuck in Park

My shifter is frozen and I think I have narrowed down the culprits. After taking apart the center console there is a piece which secures the shifter in Park. I would think that if I put my foot on the brake with the key turned over that this piece would retract and I could shift. Well it doesn't retract. At the same time it is more difficult for me to get my key out of the ignition. I took the cover off of the steering column and held another switch up and this released my key. Please advise on what you think I could do to fix this.

Thanks

There's a little e-clip underneath the medallion/cover on the shift lever. This may have become dislodged so that button doesn't work and you can't shift out of park.

As Roverlady said, there is also a brake interlock feature...I've heard that a burnt-out brake light bulb can immobilize the vehicle....

Electickery - BAH!

The brakes don't light up and the brake switch is still in place. Should there be some frayed wires or what else could I check to see where it is faulty.

A bulb could immobilize my vehicle? I've had a burnt out brake light before, but never this.

Thanks

I removed my lockout solenoid (first pic) and don't have to worry about it anymore.

Good Luck,

Mike

CHeck your fuse box under the steering wheel, I forget which fuse it is, but it should be the one for the tail lights and brake lights. Also, just check to see if you have brake and tail lights. If not, you probably blew the fuse. If the fuse is blown you should check for a short somewhere back by your tailights (this was problem atleast). If the fuse is good and the lights work then it's probably the brake switch. Good luck!

Brake switch is a $30 part...if your fuses are good, it's worth a try there. It plugs into the brake pedal stem under the dash and prevents your shifting out of park without depressing the pedal...that is, until it fails.

x10 on being the brake switch. Mine failed on the way home from my GF's house. I mcgiverd the hell out of it (stuck a safety pin between two of the connectors) to allow me to get to the stealership to pick up the part. They listed it as 32.00 but dropped the price down to 18.99 for me.

As stated above it's probably your brake light switch. Test it for continuity when it's depressed, if it has none then it is bad. R&R it and all should be well.

If I take our the solenoid I still don't think that will fix my "Key" problem.

Checking the fuses right now.

Key problem is most likely related to the slight incorrect adjustment of your transmission PRND321 switch.

If you happen to be traveling through Mid-Missouri then you need to bring your own brake switch because no one here has one. I called all the stores (3 Oriellys, 1 Napa and 1 Autozone) and I got a quote from "1" guy at Autozone for $10.00 and 3 day lead time. After I had explained who made the Discovery and that it wasn't a Toyota.

I "Macgyered" it to get it out of the way and will have to order the part from RN or AB.

Thanks for the help today and if you are coming this way stop by and i'll buy a few.

does this also apply to d2?

My truck is a D2.

From what I understand, the brake switch fails regularly on the D2 when it gets wet. On our trails, we have unlimited opportunity to submerge our trucks... which is why I was advised to carry a spare.

That said, the old saying "whatever you're prepared for won't happen" has been true for me. :) I've never had my brake switch fail. :)
