95 Disco I. Over the past year, the transfer case shift lever has gotten harder and harder to shift back and forth. Now I have to be Popeye just to get it in and out of gear. Is there a way to lube this; or what else is going on? Thanks.

i had the transfer case shifter freeze up on me a couple of years ago (96 disco sd 5speed). the truck used to be my father's daily driver, and he didn't exercise the t-case enough.

basically, the handle is connected to a splined wheel with a collar that rotates forward and backward to actuate the high/low range. there is a rod going through this wheel that moves side to side to engage diff lock. if its still moving, you should be able to lubricate it without taking the whole box out. the site andy gives is a very good reference.

personally, my t-case shifter box was completely frozen, so i had to take it out and (carefully) beat it with a hammer to get it to move. the rod was especially well frozen inside the splined wheel. but grease it up well and use it from time to time, and it should keep working.

I shift this lever about twice a day over the last 6 months (I live on a class IV road) -- so its not "frozen" or corroded in place. It is just getting harder and harder to shift. Is there any way to lube it absent disassembly? I followed the previous link (thanks) and I'm not quite ready for the crow bar yet -- and hoping for something simpler. It still moves (barely). I did search this before I posted -- but didn't find any thing on a lever that was still working, but needed lube. Obviously, I hoping for the easiest possible solution.

OK if TC+Diff Lock shifter gets used a lot but is still stiff, have you checked TC lube level?......mine was low and had a slow [1 litre/pint/ every 4-6 months] so I refilled with gearbox seal sweller +TC lube +1 cup of Molybdenum disulphide grease (which I also use in my swivel spheres - 50/50 lube+Moly grease).....and the TC + Diff Lock schnicks in and out of every position so nicely now!
