Speedometer at zero on highway?

I was driving yesterday and noticed my speedometer was at zero . . .I have heard this might be associated with an alternator about to fail. Also my amber check engine light has been coming on intermittenly-on one day, off the next. Anyone have any ideas? The speedometer has only done this 3 times in the last 5 years, but twice in the past week . . getting worried.
Thanks

Rover1,
I think Joey hit the nail on the head, check your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). I experienced the same thing yesterday on my way to work. Never had a problem with my speedo cable till yesterday. I had just glanced down at my gauges and all of a sudden the Speedo went to 0 yet the tack was still at 2500rpms (normal for the speed I was traveling). I've been chasing a problem with intermittent engine cutting out then a second later its back up and running like nothing happened. I've been told by numerous D-Webers that its probably the VSS.

Guess I'll be replacing it soon, hope it remedies the situation.
Good luck,

Thanks fergy . . . is the VSS easy to replace? I'm sure not cheap, but is this something I could do or LR mechanic only?
Thanks again.

I actually found my VSS on ebay BNIB and it was only $65 shipped to my door. I was having some jerking problems in 4th gear so thats why i got it. Fixed it right up. The install is quite easy if you hve the proper tools. There is a write up in the tech section about it. I actually cut and tac welded the allen wrench into the socket and it worked great.
Good Luck

Rover1,

As Landylight indicated in his reply, take a look at the VSS article under the "tech" section. The only real challenge that I can tell from the article(and Landylight's reply) is the re-installation of the allen head screw....appearently its pretty tight in that area.
I think that the price that I came across was more in the $90 to $100 range. As for the "operation", if you can turn a wrench and have the right tools you should be able to complete it by yourself. I took a look under my D1 and located the VSS, its tight in there but do-able, I'd say on a scale of 1 to 5 beers, its a 1.5 (18oz).

Glad to hear that the VSS fixed Landylight's gremlin.

Good luck,
