November 11th ? A challenging Big Bear trail run is being planned, with a Special Test Drive Opportunity!

What's Happening:
A Land Rover friend of mine is currently employed by Toyota as part of the FJ Trail Teams. A few people from the FJ Trail team want to go wheeling with their Land Rover buddies on Saturday November 11th. They want to make it interesting and challenging, and have decided that Big Bear offers the right degree of difficulty. Trails being considered are the infamous John Bull Trail, Holcomb Creek trail, and Gold Mountain.

Special Event!
If you want to compare your rig to the new FJ, this is a great opportunity. This is the last trail run these FJ guys will be doing this year, so they have been authorized by Toyota to take it to the max! In fact, the FJ guys will be ENCOURAGING people take turns behind the wheel of their FJ?s!. The ultimate test drive! Plus, they will be giving out all sorts of Toyota swag as sort of a year end blow out.

The FJ guys are extremely experienced professional off roaders and as they put it, ?are being paid to help?. Their goal and passion is to get everyone through intact and unharmed. Even if that means they have to stack rocks (for some of us) the entire way through. Having said all that, I?ll be honest, I?m a bit nervous about dragging my LR3 through it, but what the heck, it?s what I got it for. Need to test it sooner or later :)

Trail Info:
These trails are considered to have a high degree of difficulty by the Jeep guys. To participate, you must have recovery points and gear installed and on board. It is highly recommended that your truck have rock sliders and ample skid plate protection. Steel bumpers are also recommended, Willingness to potentially scratch/dent/break your vehicle is mandatory. FRS radios are mandatory. Bring your own food/water/gas/oil/coolant/fluid/etc? A helpful attitude is mandatory. Good humor is highly recommended!

The trails consist of basketball to trashcan sized boulders tumbled together creating some semblance of a trail. It will be slow going, and patience with less capable trucks and drivers (like me!) will be necessary.

Summary:
If you want to compare your rig to the new FJ, or drive one yourself, this is a unique opportunity. I have no idea of the number of trucks that will be participating, though I expect at least 10-15 trucks of all types. This invite is being posted on multiple forums, including some of our Toyota friends.

Additional info regarding meeting points, times, radio frequencies, etc?will be posted soon. None of us have run these trails before, so we will tackle them with an adventurous spirit. This event will not have the same degree of organization as some events, so please keep that in mind. No Whinners!

All the normal disclaimers apply.

Count me in. 1 DII mildly modified, willing to break it, smash it, bash it, roll it, whatever for fun, have gear (Adam, give me back my shackles), will bring food and drink, possibly stay at my house in Arrowhead as a base camp.

BTW, the winch is fully operational, I need recovery in the rear, but the front is awesome. I suggest we all think of front/rear pull points and lets hit it hard. I will also have all tools for just about any eventuality. The only problem is strapping them down!!...almost got killed by my own toolbox 2 weeks ago.
Looking forward to it.

I have a shackle that mounts into the tow hitch you can use if it you need it. Do you have a tow hitch? I also have a winch. My diffs have low gears so I will not have a problem pulling some one out of anything. I've also helped a friend flip his jeep back after rolling over.

You guys should have no problem with any of the trails listed.

Oh man, are you sure?

Reading this thread doesn't make me feel like they wheel with the Zen of the Grey Elephant.

LOL

Very true, not all are so lucky.

But none of the trails listed are very difficult.

It all depends on the capablities of the truck. Mine has shallow approach and departure angles, no ground clearance, and very little articulation. Should be quite a day!

I was just up in Big Bear this weekend. The weather was perfect.
I ran with a pack of Rubicon's and they could not stop talking crap about my Land Rover but at the end I was the first one to make it to the end of the run. I went on the Holcomb Creek trail and I have to say that this trail is not recommended if you don't have lockers and plenty of clearance underneath.

All of these trails can be (were) done in a stock D1 with open diffs.
No sweat. The wider vehicles will have more trouble than narrow - expect some fun watching FJ in the "rock garden" at Holcomb Creek, and here and there at John Bull.
Gold Mountain is a very easy trail, with one loose but short hillclimb. It turns outright nasty in winter, though - a toboggan ride down very tight switchbacks North of the ridge.

There's plenty of photos from all these trails on EE website.

Count me in, after all the Rover is still all packed and in one piece after Pinyon Mountain in Anza Borrego. (P38 does fit through the squeeze- thanks to some great spotting). Honestly did not notice any difference with the new rear truetrac, i imagine the John Bull Trail may be an opportunity to put it to the test.
Looking forward to Saturday
