how do you set timing when you are reassembling a completely disassembled engine? I know cyl 1 at tdc but how do you line up the cam exactly?

The engine management system sets the timing based on reference signals from the cam and crank sensors.

and make sure you don't have the rockers installed when aligning them unless you want to bend a valve or pushrod

On the timing gears. Bottom one goes at 12 o'clock, top one goes at 6 o'clock.
