SD and LR Adventure Racks

Visited local LR dealer on Saturday to measure the height of DII with LR roof rack. While doing this, I noticed a Safety Devices sticker on the rack (it was on a 2004 G4 that is still there). The salesman told me that it was the rack they ordered from LR.

Question: Are the LR rack and the safety devices rack the same one?

I have a 2004 G4 Disco and would like the SD rack (thats what G4 racers used) but I can get the LR rack cheaper. If they are the same... Anyone know?

Thanks,
Joel

the LR genuine rack is made by safety devices. I've seen one ordered from LR and one ordered from SD directly and I couldn't see a difference.

The flames will begin with the next paragraph I write, but I don't really care.

Take a look at northwest parts rack. I've got one - love it - and a few other guys I know have them and love them, and they are considerably less $. don't get sucked in to "only genuine". the quality of the NWP rack was in some question 2-3 years ago, but my understanding is that they changed fab shops and they are coming out much better. Mine is a year old and ZERO problems. There's definitely a difference, dont' misunderstand, but the difference IMHO is not worth the 500 dollar delta. I've put A LOT of weight up on the top with zero flex on the rack.

I saw a rear half rack (with side rails, not flat like Kyle's) made by NWP this weekend and it looked pretty good. So I agree that the quality has certainly improved on these racks.

Second the Northwestparts rack..

Hey guys,
My truck is the Silver Discovery II shown with the LR brush guard under STANDARD VOYAGER RACK on Northwestparts website. I love the rack. I wasnt going to get sucked into paying a ton of money for the Safety Devices either. Its held up great and I have no complaints. Just thought I would add my two cents.

our dealer wanted like 1600 plus install for a sd rack for our g4 but we talked them into giving it to us as a part of buying our g4

get one from EE for 1300 but the only bad thing is that the dealer and EE are back ordered for a month

we had a nwp rack on our d2 that we just sold I?ve still got the rack and its avaible it?s the contractors version so there more are bars and smaller spaces

Well those cross bars for the stock rails would probably fetch a pretty penny... I think they quoted me $400 or so for those when I got my plain Jane 04.

I used the excessive quote from the dealer to justify the S.D. rack... but I'd bet those cross bars would fetch good $ on eBay. ;)

Have any of you ever compared the low profile rack vs. the regular rack in terms or road noise? I've always wondered if the lower one was any bit quiter on the highway....

P.S - That G4 looks pretty sweet!
