RRC Project

A while ago I picked up a 87 RRC. Good deal for $850.00.
Since then i've pulled the ineterior, only the dash and seats remain.
Pulled the roof and rear gate. Installed a 2" HD Block lift, this is temporary til I get my 3" RTE lift.
Threw some Goodyear MT/R 245/75 R16's on it and this is how it looks now.
Due to the drivers side manifold leak we've dubbed the RRC 'Rumblefish'.

I'm planning on cutting all windows, except the windshield, and doors down so I can lean out. I'm working on designing/building a roll cage, if anyone has some insight on this let me know as I really want to make a sturdy and safe cage.

Among other things including a custom soft surrey style top for the rig.
Let me know what you think.

Hey AJ - good to see you got a classic. If you do a search on here for soft top conversions, you'll find a lot of diy for roll cages etc. Good Luck!

AJ-

How did you cut just the top off, sawzall or torch? Does it seem like it would be possible to reattach the top if you built a cage inside with mounting points and a compression system?

I would put some cross bracing to support the B and C pillars, you will have some serious torsion going on, when articulating.

Looks real cool, nice to see a Rangie show its true colors :)

Do not forget that the windows do add structural strenght , so you need to compensate, nothing fancy , just run a brace from pillar to pillar across.

Wow, diggin' up the dead threads...

RRC roofs are held on by screws. No cutting required. And having worked on AJ's rig myself, I state with confidence that's how the roof came off.

Does anyone out there regularly take their roof off? I looked at mine last night and it seems like you could create some quick releases to fit the existing screw holes so you wouldn't have to undo each screw every time.

Hey, I know its kind of a BISP (boner in sweat pants) without pictures but I took off the roof of my classic last week and took it camping. Its sooo nice, but I think all four windows dropped off there regulators from driving on a graded gravel road for ten miles. Has anyone built an internal roll cage thats supports the A and B pillars while allowing the top to go back on and not killing access and headroom. I'm not planning on going hard enough off road that I'll lay it on its side, so I don't need a super burly cage. I'll post pictures this evening.

i think what he is doing is quite different than you feeling froggy one day and sawzawing your fenders to fit a 32.5" tire under the arches. why would you want to bring that topic up again anyway?

Yeah, no sawzalling involved. Just some unbolting and a handful of popped rivets. I can put the top on in less than hour and it takes maybe twenty minutes to remove it.

Online tones and emoticons aside, can anyone help me? Any ideas on where to look for a roll cage as far as shops? Should I go to 4wheel specific shop or would a racing shop be better? Again I am not looking to go to baja or have it become a serious crawler. I just want to have some lateral rigidity. Maybe two hoops (A & B pillar) would be a enough?
