Considering a summer project with my 93 LWB. Any thoughts, input or advice would be appreciated. I am thinking about removing the roof, rear hatch, D pillars, and rear cargo glass, having some cross bars welded to the B and C pillars and having a custom button down top made. I am open to other possibilities ie: removing pillars completely and installign a roll cage, or whatever else we can envision.....any thoughts? has anyone done this before and have any tips?
Thanks

Man what have I done?! Inspired everybody to bust out the saw and chop away!

As much fun as it is its a bit of work. Do some searching on Pirate - I remember seeing Jimmys truck and a couple other really nice ones. If I lived in Arizone this would have been the route I went for sure.

HAHAHA.....Yours had something to do with it, but I have been considering it for quite a while. This morning as I was cutting the roof off of a p38, I started eyeballing my LWB....flashback to the old broncos and scouts, and thought to myself, why not? I have spent the last 2 hours NOT WORKING engrossed with the possibilities lol. (sure hope no one is waiting on parts from me...lol)

I am in New Mexico, so climate was definitely a motivating factor. But it honestly does not look too difficult, remove the roof, cut down the D pillar, have my fab guy add some cross supports for the b and c pillars and then find a good upholstery guy to make up some trim pieces and top? sounds easy enough to me. Pull the interior and add some weather friendly seats and a kick ass stereo lol. Voilla! Ready for summer time!

when i put a new roof on my classic i thought about the same thing. i think you are better off with a cage because you will be able to attach the soft top all the way up the sides of the trucks, if you only attach it at the pillars it will be just a flappy canvas roof

Interesting point, but IF I keep the pillars, and have cross bars welded to them, it would accomplish the same thing, correct? My primary reasoning behind considering a cage was strictly safety reasons and possibly asthetic ones too....

You need to watch the opening sequence of Octopussy. That is the only convertible RRC that I've seen that looks good. Inward facing rear bench seats are cool.

LMAO! This was the first pic I came across when I started looking, and I felt the same way about it. Are you sure though that it doesn't just look good cuz of the driver. I guarantee if I was sitting in that seat, there would be different opinions on the asthetics lol.
This was an interesting thread on RRnet.... http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/8-range-rover-classic/23232-range-rover-convertible.html
I kind of like the idea of the white one with the "mocked up" roll cage, but would probably remove the roof over the front seats as well.

Keeping the pillars will look ghetto and a cage always looks better and is fuctional.

Did you have a top for it? The way you did it originally is exactly how I envision my LWB being when I first started theorizing. Though, I can appreciate the roll cage theory as well. I am putting a SWB on the chopping block this week and may play around with it a bit before tearing into one of my personnal drivers. I am leaning towards eliminating the c and d pillars, using inward facing seats in the rear and using a partial cage....we'll see.

there are some guys whom attend MAR, they come from florida and bring at least 2 home made open top rangies, here in Va there is aguy, Robbie Donaldson whom due to a rollover chopped the top off his disco 1
if you remenber the 1985 toyota 4 runner 2 door where the shell could be removed and a canvas top be fitted, it is the same basc behind his disco but a roll cage was built in lieu of the removed metal top...
it looks cool and as he mentions due to the top used he is able to drive it year round...
