Land Rover drive shafts, axles are investigated

April 9 - Ford Motor Co.'s Land Rover sport- utility vehicles are under investigation by U.S. safety regulators because the drive shaft or a front axle part may fail while the SUVs are being driven.

The inquiry covers 2002 through 2004 Range Rover and New Range Rover models, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site. As many as 33,000 vehicles may be affected, the Washington-based agency said.

Of 38 complaints received, 17 involved failure of the drive shaft or front-axle differential while the vehicles were traveling faster than 40 miles per hour, the agency said. No accidents or injuries were reported, NHTSA said. The problem may cause the vehicle to come to a halt, the agency said.
Ford, the second-largest U.S. automaker, sold 34,181 Range Rovers in the U.S. from 2002 through 2004, according to Woodcliff, New Jersey-based Autodata Corp. The agency began a preliminary evaluation, the first step in its safety-review process. About half of such inquiries result in a recall.

Of the Range Rover incidents, 16 required towing and eight reported that failure occurred twice, the agency said.

Is there really a recall or is there just an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration?

I just looked on the NationalHighwayTrafficSafety website: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ and could not find any information about a recall for new Range Rovers related to drive shaft or a front axle failures.

I then checked all recalls for Land Rover Range Rover and found only 2 one for EAS on 2003 models the other for transmission problems on 2004/5.

I also looked through all new announcements and could not find anything relating to LR.

What is the source of the information you have posted.

Ok, no recall yet, but good to know when your driveshaft falls off. You know LR will deny it at first, and you'll spend weeks trying to get them to acknowlege there is an issue.

I understand it is just an enquiry at the moment. There is an active and long (11 page) thread on this subject on the rangerover.net Mark III forum.
Just had my front driveshaft go and destroy the front diff last week on my '03 RR.

Today I posted this on rangerovers.net Mark III forum:

"If there are any members of this forum living in Canada who have had the front diff problem, please report it to Transport Canada. You can do this by phone and they take down the details. Have a look at this page of Transport Canada's website: http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/tp/tp2822/page4_e.htm

I called yesterday and spoke to someone called Peter Male, who took down the details of when the front diff failed in my vehilce.. He said that Transport Canada keeps in touch with the NHTSA in the States and that he was aware there was an investigation going on down there.

But if other owners in Canada are experiencing this, if would be good to let the authorities in Ottawa know."

Just repeating it here so all bases are covered
