Land Rover drive shafts, axles are investigated
April 9 - Ford Motor Co.'s Land Rover sport- utility vehicles are under investigation by U.S. safety regulators because the drive shaft or a front axle part may fail while the SUVs are being driven.
The inquiry covers 2002 through 2004 Range Rover and New Range Rover models, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site. As many as 33,000 vehicles may be affected, the Washington-based agency said.
Of 38 complaints received, 17 involved failure of the drive shaft or front-axle differential while the vehicles were traveling faster than 40 miles per hour, the agency said. No accidents or injuries were reported, NHTSA said. The problem may cause the vehicle to come to a halt, the agency said.
Ford, the second-largest U.S. automaker, sold 34,181 Range Rovers in the U.S. from 2002 through 2004, according to Woodcliff, New Jersey-based Autodata Corp. The agency began a preliminary evaluation, the first step in its safety-review process. About half of such inquiries result in a recall.
Of the Range Rover incidents, 16 required towing and eight reported that failure occurred twice, the agency said.
