I was just wondering if anyone had built any storage shelves for the cargo area of their Disco and if so how is the best way to go about this... or if anyone knows of any ways to store and organize gear in the cargo area let me know... Thanks

I built my own cargo organizer from plywood and aluminum extrusions. It weighs in at 56 lbs, not too bad. I has two drawers, each on 100lb capacity, full-extension ball-bearing slides. The top unfolds to form a ~70" sleeping platform. It can be installed/removed in about 10 minutes. It bolts to the welded nuts in the floor of the cargo area and...you don't have to remove your rear seats :). It took two sheets of plywood, several feet of aluminum extrusion and many, many threaded wood inserts. Build time, if done continuously would be about two weekends. It's in bare wood right now, but I plan to cover it with exterior carpeting. I can post pics if you interested.

Sorry for the slow pic delivery. Here is the kit with the sleeper platform extended. I haven't finished the drawers yet, but you can see their location. You don't need to remove your rear seats and the sleeping space is about 6' x 4'.

Responses welcome,

Rob,
It weighs about 60lbs. The top panel + unfolding sleeper detach from the base for removal. This assembly weighs about 20 lbs. The drawers are removed by detaching the inner slide rail members from the rest of the slide, which remains attached to the base. Each drawer weighs about 8 lbs. The base is removed by unbolting it from the weldnuts in the floor. The base weighs about 25 lbs.

I just made something simmilar to that last weekend but it does not have the sleeper fold out. It has two drawers instead of one that extend all of the way put. It is the same hight as the top of the jump seats. I made it out of that MDF stuff because i had a bunch of it lying around but it is really heavy. Ill try to get some pictures as well if any one is interested.

I made a shelf out of 3/4" plywood and piece of carpeting. It seems to take about 150 lb of stuff without much drama.

and my wife hates it.

well, she may hate it all she wants, but when you take off for a 1k-2kmi trip, with 4 people and a 75 lb dog, you better have a place for the dog to live in the car. And that shelf is perfect for this purpose.

I built a shelf that sits behind the single seat in my 95 Disco. Storage for camping stove - camp kitchen equip below and a couple of milk crate boxes of food etc above. Then I built a vertical divider for the single seat, so I can keep the double seat folded up and the single seat is usable. The divider keeps my dog from climbing in the single seat, and she gets the full 2/3 of the back to lie down and sleep after long camping trips. All the other camping stuff goes into two duffel bags lashed to the roof. Even if the double seat is folded down for sitting in, there's still room for my dog in the "very back". I secured the shelf with the bolt that holds the square tube that holds the cargo cover, so everything is completely dismountable with no damage to the truck. Still need to make a few refinements, but it's working great and makes packing for a quick camping trip a 20 minute process

This is the system I built from plywood about 9 years ago. I have just remodeled it to add a fridge slide. Hope it gives you some ideas. The draws slide on hardwood or aluminium angles and waxed.
