I had my cylinders honed and got a new set of rings. When I got the stuff back from the shop the pistons were not labeled as to which cylinder they go back into. The guy told me it would be OK since they honed the cylinders and I am putting in new rings (& bearings). Does this matter or should I be OK just fitting the new rings and throwing them in regardless of order / how they originally went?

If you're unable to find any indication of which cylinder they came out of, don't worry yourself. It will not matter which cylinder they go back in. Your machinist is correct, since the cylinders were honed and you're going back with new rings you will be ok.

Then again, the only benifit in putting them back in their original hole would be if they were weighed from the factory and put into certain holes to better balance the engine. No need having all the heaviest pistons on the right side of the block. But what's the odds of the factory weighing the pistons before putting them in. A hand built Farrari, yes. An assembly line built LR, I don't think so.

Do you know how much .000 were removed during the honing process? I would suggest checking the piston to wall clearance just to be on the safe side.

There does not appear to be any numbering but since the rods are still attached I can probably identify left and right bank and then from there match up tiny score marks (only a few). Thanks
