I need a new radar detector. I'm looking at the Escort Solo S2 cordless and Valentine One. I don't have personal experience with either so I would like anyone's input on which the would suggest.

thanks

I have a Valentine. My commute is 200 miles daily, and V1 has more than paid for itself. (The advantage of cordless unit shows itself when I forget to grab the cord out of the glovebox of my regular car when I drive customer's cars home!)

The V1 has arrows that ID the direction of the transmitter. The adjustable sensitivity is nice and has alerted me many times well before I could see the police.

Customer service for purchases was perfect. Haven't had any warranty issues at all and from personal experience, I would highly recommend the Valentine.

I have the Solo S2 and it is a great detector. I've had no issues with it over the last 3 years I've had it. I don't use it often ( since they are illegal here in VA ) but, I use it mainly for trips out of state. Has worked great although it could be better at instant on POP lidar.. Of course all of the detectors have issues with instant on laser guns unless you are in heavy traffic where they are shooting the beam alot.. I bought it because I didn't want the cord running down the windshield but, I also have the smart cord for it too.. There are better corded options out there though.. If you want cordless then the Solo S2 is the best choice for that.. If you want the best detector out there then it's going to come with a cord and my choices would be either the Bel RX65, the Passport X50, or the Valentine.

For some great info go to www.radarbusters.com Website has a great test page where you can see how all the radar detectors stack up..

I think I want to go the cordless route. I'm getting a new car and I don't want to have the cludder from wires and all that stuff that I have in my disco now. However, while reading that I might consider the escort 8500 x50. Anyone ahve any experence with that one?

I second the Valentine...

I have had it in my DII for about 3 years now. Love it, works great. Haven't been caught yet!! ;) You can use the included hardwire kit and it works perfect.

Chris, I've got the x50 and i have to say that it is awesome. I've used both the valentine and the passport and each has its merits, but I'd have to reccomend the x50. Not only is it alot cheaper, it is really easy to customize and program. The directional arrows on the valentine are cool, but after having used the x50 for almost a year now i'd have to say that they're really not necessary for the extra$$. I also like the display on the x50 (red or blue) because it is really easy to read in all conditions. My only complaint about the passport is that with the music cranking and windows down i find that the volume sometimes isn't loud enough.

When i bought mine at Bestbuy i also got a 2yr plan that basically will give me a new detector if something better comes out or i drop it....

Also check out http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleid=9090

I have occasionally picked up laser on the passport, but that's a definate rarity (for all of them).
(in my state i can take the front plate off)

edit;

just a side note about the cordless that i forgot - Your basically paying more and getting less detection with these becuase the detector cycles on and off to save battery, so there's less distance and less time to adjust accordingly...

Ya, you are paying for the cordless convenience that is for sure.. However, the Solo S2 is as good and better then "most" of the corded detectors out there as far as range and detection ( whistler, PNI, and other junk ).. Granted they are at half to a 3rd of the price.. Although the higher end models like the x50, RX65, and such are better then the Solo S2 but, only by a small percentage. It is a great detector even better that its cordless.. At least for my needs anyways..

Also, on a side note I haven't had an issue with the sunlight making the display hard to read.. Maybe it's just me but, I never had an issue with it and I have a sunroof in every car I drive.

But, as stated before unless you really want cordless then you are a little better off getting a corded one.. The built in ones I really like due to the fact that you don't have the detector in plain view for everyone to see.. Nice and stealthy.. I would have went that route if I wasn't living in VA but, I still would have gotten the cordless to use for rental cars when traveling.

Honestly the one that I would really like is the one that actually goes into the car. They have it at the dealership where I'm getting the car, but I really can't justify spending that 1200 for it. How is it that the X50 is customizable? What is it that you can do with it exactly? The volume i'm not that worried about, at least it will be quiet on the inside of the car, and I can usually hear the noise with the one I have which is half dead at the moment.

Sorry i got a little overzealous in my description. By customizable i was referrring to the fact that you can program it really easily to do exactly what you want and not what you dont. As far as actually customizing it, i don think there's much beyond hardwiring it. The built-in radar systems are cool, but it they can get really $$ fast, not to mention that its usless against lidar.

I have a built in detector, and i hate it. it just beeps. if you get one make shure it tells you what your getting hit with "x band , k band , ka band, or lazer " that way you can tell if it is a fales signal.

byt the V1 is the best imho
