Question about coolant pressure, need advice

I snapped the damn nipple off the top of my rad when I was changing out my PS pump :banghead: There was a little meat left on it so I clamped the hose on. Under pressure there is a slight leak where its attached the the rad. I have a new rad on order but can I drive around with the coolant cap loosened for a few days in order to prevent the hose from blowing off? I know the boiling point will lower when not under pressure. I drive level roads at highway speed to and from work. Always something....

That plus some rtv would probably buy some time, but it depends on the state of the plastic you are taping into. With 150k miles on my rad, for a lack of a better term, the plastic is staring to dry rot from the inside out. I replaced almost all the plastic cooling components already. I may try to clean up what's left of the nipple, coat it with epoxy and reclamp the hose in for now. Hopefully my 90 dollar cheap fuck rad comes in soon. Any other comments on not letting the coolant system pressurize?

Well I ended up drilling it and screwing in a brass barb coated with jb weld. I'm going to let it cure for 5 hours. Hopefully it holds.

I don't see why this would not work. I too am sick of the brittle plastic on these things. Just keep a close eye on it till your new rad comes in.

The cooling system requires pressure to operate correctly. Higher pressure = higher boiling point. If you drove with the cap off coolant would be spewing out of the reservoir once the motor ot warm.
