I am thinking of installing a Big Sky Racks BSR 2 in my 03 II. For stability I am considering going straight through the roof. I have a roof rack and I don't plan on ever selling it so why not. Does anyone have any experience with these racks? If I just do the side mounts, will that be secure enoungh? The last thing I need is to be off road and have a couple of rifles or shotguns fall on my head. Thanks. Oh yeah, I need to replace the sagging headliner first. I got a quote for $300 in Houston. is that about right. I really don't want to do it myself. There are some things I'm good at and others I'm not. I see a do it it yourself replacement headliner job going very poorly.

what about the ones you just hook on the back of your seats?

That big sky rack looks sweet and super tactical but do you really need something like that? I don't road hunt very much so don't need quick access to my rifle. If you are hunting a huge ass piece of land. Like a 5k acre ranch or something then yeah I could see that.

BUT, I would think you could figure out how to mount a piece of aluminum or something behind the headliner to bolt the gun rack to so you wouldn't have to drill through your roof. I assume you would want to put it up there where those net holder things are by the rear sunroof controls and mount it crossways in there on that slant in the roof?

I used one in my full-size Bronco. When I installed it I put two strips of sheetmetal about 2" wide on the top side of the headliner. I did not want to depend on the headliner to support the wait of my rifles. It worked well. I would avoid screwing through the metal of the roof. You might be able to align 2 of the screws with a reinforcment rib in the roof.

Can you just feel the reinforcement steel through the headliner? I am going to go check. I am going to do the 2 gun version for above my head and the single for the area with the webbing as I don't think it is large enough for the 2 gun version. I hunt over large areas sometimes with friends. We all have guns and gear. It would just be easier.

I like the idea of mounting a large aluminum plate with the rack mounted to it with recessed screws. I guess some metal epoxy would do the trick. Thanks.

get a nice lockable gun locker and bolt it to the floor in the back or in the cargo area. you dont need that stuff 1, visible and 2 where it can go flying in a wreck and 3, where a simple glass window is all that is seperating it from being yours and being somebody elses.

the roof wont support much weight especially bouncing when you drive.

I think this is a terrible idea.

you'll get crap all over the headliner, or at least I would with the greasy sooty crap I shoot
you are in houston so your truck will eventually get broken in to
I'm not 100% sure on this but I don't think you can have an unconcealed firearm within reach of the drivers seat

I've thought about getting those "umbrella holders" that go on the rear dog cage for those screw-around-on-some-property weekends, but under the rear cargo cover don't cost nothing

I won't be leaving the firearms in the vehicle unattended in Houston. You are right about the headliner though. That is something I haven't thought about. You can have an unconcealed firearm in reach of the driver's seat as long as it is unloaded. Once on the hunting property it isn't an issue. I have to go back to the closet and get out my three-D drawing board and go back to work on this one. Right now everyones cased firearms are taking up way too much space.

I made a gun mount for my ar-15. Right above my head mounted under the sunroof. Looked badass! I could grab my rifle while driving. Downside... Couldn't use sun roof and could only shoot out of driver's side window. Couldn't swing rifle around very well to shoot out of pass window :(. Cops made me take it down while they fucking screamed at me. They didn't think it was funny! I just laughed and told them it's ok!...I have a lifetime license to carry a handgun! So other than the look people give you at a stop light when they look up and see an ar-15 in your sunroof (loaded)!!! ?priceless). Not really worth a shit. Probably not going to do it again!

Jeeesus keyrist, it's not as though open carry isn't legal in Indiana or anything.

You should have screamed right back at them that you were in compliance and they should learn the laws they are supposed to be enforcing!
