Hey -
My daughter is considering going to NCSU in Raleigh. Can any NC folks here comment on this school and life in Raleigh in general? She's looked at several schools, but NCSU has Navy ROTC in addition to a top notch competition rifle team, which she badly wants to keep up with.

I believe it's supposed to be a good science/technology school, and she wants to be a Naval officer and go to med school.

Thanks for any advice, info. Her other top pick is University of Minnesota, and I told her she'd enjoy life in NC far more than MN - we live in TN now. Two hours to the beach, two hours to the mountains - paradise. Plus NC is just a great state - very cool, great towns, nice vibe about the whole place.

I think NCST is a fine school and I have nothing negative to say about it other than stating that their football team is going to get embarrassed in one week by the Gamecocks.

If she is looking at tech schools in the SE, she may want to consider GT and VT also (I don't know if they have ROTC or a rifle team). I went to GT for my MS and it is one of the best engineering schools in the country and VT is a very good school also.

Penn State has Navy ROTC, excellent engineering, a med school, awesome mountain access and the better football team than anyone mentioned. :)

Great school. I've got many friends that graduated from there. It is very unpretentious unlike it's neighbors, Chapel Hill and Duke. Lot's to do around Raleighwood and it is in a good central location. My wife attended NCSU for a year and a half before taking a semester off to go to Vail (turned into 6 years) then finished up at CSU. She still has great affection for NCSU. FWIW I worked with several officers in my military career that were NCSU ROTC grads.

Cheers,

Mike

I had a choice between NCSU and VA Tech when I separated form active duty. Ended up at Tech because they have an awesome football program!;) VA Tech has a Navy ROTC but to be a part of it you have to join the Corps of Cadets, which is a similar experience you would get going to VMI or Citadel but not quite as harsh. You still get to take classes with regular students, but the Corps has their own portion of campus and all of the cadets live in the barracks. The VA Tech NROTC is second only to the Naval Academy, it produces more Naval Officers than any ROTC. Raleigh was to big of a city for me, the atmosphere around Blacksburg is like one you wont find anywhere else. Great place to go to school!!!

I loved my time at NCSU (top notch engineering programs!) and really like Raleigh. Depending on what she wants to do while at State (hmmm... Biomedical Engineering?), she might be at the new Centennial Campus.

In general, Raleigh is a very clean, safe city with an awesome downtown area. There is a LOT of opportunity here, especially in medicine with Duke and UNC. Duke Hospital is undergoing a $700M expansion as we speak. As an engineering student, I had the pleasure of working for Bovis Lend Lease on Duke's MSRB-2 and GHRB labs. Anything otherwise technical is at Research Triangle Park.

I've heard that this area is one of the fastest growing areas in the country - sure seems like it!

Considered Tennessee Tech? Good science/engineering school, and would be in-state. And it's small compared to some place like Virginia Tech though (which is also a good school). But on a whole, I do like NC.....
