No Power to the Fuel Pump

'96 Discovery, Died on me the other night. I have no power to the fuel pump. I've checked the fuse, which is good. I'm guessing the problem is either a relay or a short in the wiring. Can anyone tell me where the relay is? Is there anything else I should check?

Thanks,

Ryan

Remove the fuel pump access panel and check the voltage/continuity at the fuel pump connector. Could simply be a corroded connection or a short in the wires or perhaps your pump is toast. If your getting power to the pump, pull the pump out of the tank (not an easy task due to that damn plactic flange ring) and test it directy to a 12v battery to see if it runs. If it does, your problem is most likely the wiring on the pump in the tank.

get a the big big pair of channel locks (18 inch i think) to get that plastic ring off. you can always use a giant pair of pliars. i used them one time at a tailgate to cook a can of beans

hey ryan

check the fuel pump harness
those things gett a pile-o-corrosion in them

i just had to do a harness and fuel pump on my dads disco due to harness corrosion.
bummer was that the fuel pump was good but the pins were rotten.
good luck

I had to replace the the harness when I replaced the fuel pump. Make sure you use an open flame to give you light if you work after dark.

That was sarcasm by the way.

The connector to the pump looks fine. There's no visible corrosion. When I say there's power to the fuel pump, I just used a test light, and after the ignition was turned on, it lit up on one of the pins for a few seconds. It only took me about 15 minutes to get the fuel pump out, but then I had something come up with work. Tomorrow I think I'm just going to take the fuel pump out of the other disco, plug it in, and see if it works. I figure that will let me know if the pump is the problem, or if it's in the wiring somewhere.

Thanks for the input.

Well, it's not the fuel pump, I tried switching the pumps in the rovers this morning, and it worked in the running rover, but the one from the running rover didn't work in the one that has the problems. I am kind of at a loss now. I'll trace all the wiring and see what I can find, but not really sure what to check from here. For some reason the fuel pump is not activating. Any other idea's would be appreciated as I am at a loss.

Thanks,
Ryan

It was close, in all honesty I was about 5 minutes away from loading it up on a trailer and taking it into the shop. I just couldn't figure it out. If my brother hadn't come out to help me, and turned the ignition while I messed with the wires, I would have taken it down and be out a lot more money. Dang Utah Salt!

Got it, it was a short in the ground wire.

Thanks guys,

Ryan

Where was it? My Disco is parked in front of the bagel shop.... Similar problem (i.e. fuel pump does not run).
Last time it happened, that was just after taking it to the car wash. I figured that was an alarm system issue as it started working fine again after a while.
I'll go back there in one or two hours with some tools to troubleshoot the issue.
Last I was looking for the fuel pump relay that is supposed to be on the passenger side but could not located it. So, if you guys have a diagram of were the power goes/comes (fuel pump wise), I am a taker!
