Just wanted to post a note as I am new to the DiscoWeb.

Picked up my new 2004 two weeks ago, Adriatic Blue. Had the dealer add a Brush Bar (now I realize they used the Rover one) and the running boards. Hell couldn't beat the price with 4yr/50K plus scheduled maint ! Why are people adding the extended warranty? might added it as the warranty period end gets closer.

Have spent the last week learning about Recovery on the web and order some gear from OffRoadRecovery.com, Dave there was very helpful.

Never been offroad before, other cars are a Benz and Passat, not exactly capable.

The plan for the Disco was to help me pursue my hobby of Nature Photography, but I think she will also become a hobby.

Emma, as she has been named, will mostly be on the beaches of LI in the beginning. Spent the last two days getting various permits.

Has anyone added an aftermarket Nav ?? I have an iPAQ NAV system but was thinking of upgrading to something installed.

I am also thinking of a KN filter, everone seems to like them.

Cheers,
Lou

ummm... their rovers... not toyotas, nissans, infinity's or lexus's...

they are one of the most capable rigs right off the shelf but sometimes they can be quirky.... thus the thousands of posts you will find on this site alone.

i love my rover... enought to buy a second one!!!! (much to the wifes dismay) but what can i say... im hooked, even with all of their wonky, wierd, intermittent, behavior....

Enjoy your new rig!!! but i'd always suggest to anyone who can still get an extended warranty on their rig, to get one asap... the piece of mind is worth the $$$$

I'm confused

Thanks for the welcome !

Ken, I was really questioning if I have a 4yr/50K mile factory warranty what sense does it make to have an extended ?? Reading the warranty it seems that only wearout items are not covered... I don't think any extended warranty is going to cover breakage from offroading.

If I am loving the Disco I will add the coverage after before the factory coverage is over. If I am missing something here please tell me.

Hey Lou

let me start off saying im not normally a "Extended warranty kind of guy".... i've never been one to buy an extended warranty on anything else i own...

but I guess its a personal question of.... how much $$$ your willing to spend down the road.

for instance...

i have a 95 DI with 158K miles so far and its been a gem in LR terms... no big blow ups.. all the quirkyness has been mild... BUT i also have friends who have basically bought thier rovers and had to replace just about every big ticket item on theirs multiple times.... (GOD I HOPE I DIDNT JUST JINX MYSELF  :D )

anyway, after watching some friends pour dollar after dollar i could see how a Extended warranty is well worth it... esp after the initial 50K mile warranty ends

SO when i got my 01 P38 i made sure that in addition to the base factory warranty of 4/48K it had a LR extended warranty of 1/12 giving me a total of 5yr 60K mile...

Furthermore to extend the warranty to 10yr /100k it will cost me an additional $4k.... ugh... in any event much to my supprise my wife was like "God damn it.... why did you get that thing... now you BETTER get an extended warranty!!!!! cause ill be damned if that things gonna eat us alive in garage bills

I think if you asked just about anyone on this or any other LR board...if the warranty is worth the extra $$$ i think they would say.... YES

hope that helps/makes sense...

Lou, welcome. I just bought the factory style safari rack and I am adding the flooring. I would think this would make a great platform for photography. My wife is beginner photographer and likes the rack. Enjoy the disco. pretty soon it will consume you like it did me. I started this trip a year ago and now it's my main hobby. Good people here on the d-web. Just ask and they will help.

Ken,

I agree, warranty will be in order if I am going to keep her past the 4/50. I have the option of adding it up until a month before (or 1K) the factory warranty is up.

Andrew, do you have a pointer to the kit ?

Thanks,
Lou

well other people have mentioned it, but i'll be blunt. Get rid of the running boards. Sell them on Ebay, get what you paid for them. I went to the land rover dealership offroading experience event for my first event, and even at that weak even, I dented the shit of them. Your best bet is to sell them, get money back, and spend your money on rovertym [maybe safarigard?] rock sliders with the step built in... the way your running boards are hooked up is very weak, two long bolts for each one, I hit a rock and had them flush against the side...

Greetings and salutations. I love our rovers, '96 d1, SE-7 and a '03 freelander. I have come to the realization that if you get a good one keep it and drive the hell out of it and if you don't borrow, sell or trade your way into one. They really are the ultimate SUV, I have posted this before that some of my buddies won't go in the bush, unless I go to pull them out at times. Welcome and this is a grreat site!!!! Ron

Lou, I'm having the flooring cut at a metal shop to my specs (basically my measurements). To cover most of the floor of the rack. I can e-mail pics if you want. I'm sure you have many metal shops where you live who can do the same. As far as the rack I bought one of the safari style racks you see on many of the discos on this site. I just like the look of the "factory" style the best. They can be expensive so shop around.

Lou,

The rack that follows the stepped roofline of the discovery is made by Safety Devices and is marketed by Land Rover, and other 4x4 aftermarket equipment vendors. A new rack of this type can set you back $1200. But if you are patient, you can pick up a used one for $400 - $700. Keep checking in the part for Sale section.

Also, look in the resourses section and you'll fond links to variour Land Rover aftermarket vendors like Atlantic British, Rovers North, DAP, and several others. Get some catalogs, and look at their offerings, Their selection is nuch broader thatn what you would fond at a dealership.

And if you want advice before making a purchase, do a search on what interest you and you are likely to find a lot of info about it from people who are already using the product.

Welcome aboard, and enjoy your Rover.

You will love your Rover! I have a 2004 G4 Disco and my wife has a 2003 HSE Disco. I got the side steps on my first Rover (2002 Disco) and basically took them off and put on the 03 HSE (not the off-roader). The first trip off road will likely end up ripping them off. If you can trade them in do it now and put the cash on the extended waranty. I am slowly building up to "real" off roading in my G4 but it takes fortitude to go off roading in a $40K car. After I banged up my rear fender on a rock its a little easier now. That rock was the one that broke to Rangy air suspensions, ripped up 3 sets of steps, and I think wiped out a couple of sets of factory front fogs on a few 2002's. Take it slow and find a couple of off roaders and let them help you.

Good luck!
