hey all, the 99 D2 spun the mains out, its time for new motor. I have a call into Will already, but i want to look at all my options. I guess the two main things I need to know are 1.) what engine choices do i have, ie. 4.0, 4.6, long block, short block, new, used, rebuilt, deisel...and 2.) where to buy? other than Will i cant find anyone that supplies good rover engines

Money is an issue but not the deciding one. I need to get atleast 2 more years out of the D2, but would like to run it for as long as possible. My local and very capable mechanic has quoted a ball-park labor figure of $1000.

thoughts?

I had my 00DII 4.0 swapped with a 4.6 short from an 04 that had been rebuilt. I got the engine for 1100 bucks. Here's the deal, the short block swap will have higher labor costs due to the mechanic taking apart all of the ancillaries and "top end" and reattaching them. The long block option is going to be more expensive for the engine component but the labor is cheaper because there are fewer things to connect.

It took 24 hours of labor to get my short block installed. It took a week and the guys at Falconworks in Tucson told me they were working overtime. Total labor bill was aroun $3,000. Total bill was $4,000. Which brings me to my next point, due to the age of your truck, when you mechanic starts taking things apart and putting back together he will find repair items that need to be dealt with since the engine is already dismantled. You will want to add about a 10-15% contingency to deal with those items.

As far as which engine, get a 4.6L. Best bet is a rebuilt one from an 04. I believe they worked out some bugs from the 03s, like the oil pump shaft.

Over 100 engines for sale on http://www.car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi These are all licensed wrecking yards throughout the US. If your gonna upgrade to a 4.6 you'll have to determine if your 99D2 has secondary air injection or not. I believe most D2 4.6 s have secondary air. Which could be a PITA to switch over or block off.

My 4.6 came without the secondary air, but I think mine came out of a range rover.

I have pretty much settled on a 4.6 from a 99 RR, from Drillbit (Marty), it has 80k on the clock but he has every service record for it from day one, even has the original window sticker, creampuff as he called it.

It does not have secondary air and he is including the ecu for a very reasonable price. This may turn out to be a good thing...in the long wrong...the very very long run

thanks all

Last I knew that is correct they won't work on disco's. Damn snobs.

I think it's pretty lame they won't work on Discos & RR, where are all the 4.6s coming from anyway?

However I do see on their website this picture, and there appears to be a disco on a lift...wtf
