Don't laugh, I have a handful of 8 tracks. My parents were so cheap they got us the 10 tapes for a penny for Christmas one year. And since they didn't listen to our music (or rock-n-roll), we got an assortment of stuff. From The Platters to Frampton to KC and the Sunshine Band. I still have two in their original Columbia House sleeves. I think there's one in the shrinkwrap. I'll break out the camera later and get pics.
Hopefully the Silver Shadow I pic up still has the Leer 8-track player in it.

Ahh the memories, the very first piece of music I ever bought for myself was an 8-track. I had collected tons of bottles along the side of the road and walked them about 2 miles up to the quickie mart and turned them in for change. I did it over and over again for weeks until I had enough money to buy the 8-track at the counter that I had been eyeing. I gave up all those precious quarters for Joust and Dig Dug just to carry home a crappy Marie Osmond tape. I was a weird kid.

I never download, I only listen to what I rip from my own CD's.

EAC/LAME w/ the alt-preset standard for mp3's. Sure, if you've got a hi-fi system, it's not what you're going to go gah-gah over, you'll jsut be using your CD's (or better, your phonograph). But, on *most* systems, like in your car or on your PC or an iPod or a Zune, you won't be able to tell the difference between it and an old Walkman CD player.

My Walkman phone, I've got a 4gb card in it w/ about 700 mp3s on it. Using EAC/LAME w/ a variable bit-rate, it's a little smaller than a 320kbs rate, but sounds FAR better than a 192 rate rip.

I'd like to go a true lossy format, but, I'd have to have better equipment to make it worth the time investment to re-rip all of my CD's again.

I got a Zune for my daughter, a Walkman mp3 player for my son. No iPods, yet. (If the iPod Touch gets a sizable price-cut soon, and they add the GPS into it the way they did w/ the 3G iPhone, that may change.... but, mostly for mobile internet use when in wifi hotspots...).

Since I found legalsounds, I've started downloading like mad. The tracks are DRM free and only about $.09 a piece, so a whole album is around $1. That way, I can buy new releases & I'm not bummed if I don't really like the album. Plus, when you've added a certain amount of money to your account, they give you bonus money, which makes the songs even cheaper (I've averaged $.07/song with the bonuses). They don't have very many indie artists, though, which really sucks.
Spinner Canada has a free track a day, and they feature some great indie artists. I've found a lot of great new talent that way, too.
I transferred all my CDs to my computer. It took FOREVER, but it is SO nice being able to make mixes with TONS of songs to play in the car. Even though I can hook the iPod up to the RR, I still prefer to play CDs. I find it too distracting to use the iPod while driving. Maybe it's because the RR's stereo system is so good, but I really don't think the playback quality of the MP3s is bad.
The cool thing about the new Jaguar XF is that you can plug a USB drive into it (or an iPod), and you have full touch-screen & steering wheel access to all of the playlists, etc... with full song titles & everything. I'd love to see THAT in LR soon.

Last time I was in PA I popped into LR Main Line to have a look at that XF. I walked over, looked inside, sat inside, looked all around it, and didn't like it. Then, that glorious black XJR sitting in the middle of the showroom kept my attention going for the rest of the time I was there.

The XF is nice, but it wasn't built for me. I can dig the sheetmetal, but it's the package that I don't like. All that flip up shifter dial stuff is cool, but it's just one more bit between me and the machine. And who in their right mind wants a British air conditioning system bound by vents that electrically power open? I can see the sweat now.

I'm a fairly young fellow, compared to many people who favor the brand, but that styling is just too darned modern for me. I like things simple and elegant. All this fancy nonsense on cars nowadays is driving me nuts.

Alright James May, I'll say it. That's not a proper Jaguar.:p Not to me, anyway. If I were going to buy my favorite sedan, the car I'd love to have despite practicality and common sense, I'd get an XJ. It is by far my favorite sedan. I'd probably get an XJR without the supercharger if one can be had nowadays, as I don't like forced induction. I might even do it, I have no idea what I'm after anymore.

I'll tell you something though, that new Jag coupe looks better than the Aston.

Cheers,

Kennith

yea some mp3s can be junk. most of the time tho...are people that anal about the quality?

i love having a real recorded cd but torrents are basically just as good. when i rip a cd to my ipod the difference is so small. so reach into those wallets and buy some audio equipment. i took out all the stock rover speakers EVERYTHING!!! what are those made of cardboard. try putting a high output sound system into that truck and you'll hardly notice the difference. or if yer broke just TURN IT UP.

all stock speakers are crap so have fun and rip em out and thro em in the trash. oh yea another bonus to mp3s: cds always wear out and get scratched to hell, especially if you get some grains of sand in the case. no more lame stuffed cd books full of loose discs falling out onto the floor. mp3's save time, space and matter...:nopity: :nopity: :nopity: :nopity

Several of my CD's were so scratched that I wasn't able to convert to mp3. All the back and forth in their case outta their case, sliding into the changer, all the handling and dropping and leaving them on the car seat took their toll ages ago. My computer was able to make it through a lot of the scratches and still give me a good backup. Some just weren't salvagable.

Portability is the only way I can have music anymore. I have too many other distractions at home so I never listen to music there. At work and in my car is my only peace with music now.

And in my neighborhood, I can't leave anything in my car or it will be promptly broken into and stolen (of course, they broke into my Disco at least 8 times and for some reason left all my Juliana Hatfield CD's behind, hmmmpppfff). So dragging around a big ass case of CD's isn't feasible. It's awesome to have my whole music collection, with room for more, all in the palm of my hand.

I dared to be different and got the Zune. I went through a few ipods before hand and decided to get something different. I take them mountain biking and have had no problems with the 30gig or the 8gig.
