Long time no see, sold my series coiler a couple of years ago and built a FZJ80 as a better family rig.

We are considering getting out of NY and moving to the Charlotte area next year. Looking for input on what kind of pros and cons that might involve beyond the obvious cheaper real estate and taxes. Wife works in the mortgage business, I run a financial planning practice from a home office and bartend at a craft beer place twice a week. Have a 5 year old boy now as well.

I'm no help, but I wheeled with you years ago. That was a pretty sweet Series.

But all the hipsters live in Asheville!

I've been through Charlotte several times and it seems like a nice area. No real insight for you, except to say that you will be pretty close to Uwharrie. That's not a bad thing.

Lived in China Grove for a while, and worked/traveled all over the state. Stay out of "Charlotte" proper if you can....Mike hit it right on the head. There are some nice places just east of Charlotte, and around Linconton area.
If you have a chance to do a scouting trip....do it.

When you stay stay out, do you mean of Mecklenburg county? What about 485 communities like Matthews? Would definitely do a scouting trip and rent for a year before buying.

Ok, here we go...

Matthews, Pineville, Ballantyne, Rock Hill, Tega Cay, SC, Davidson (Lake Norman), Cornelius, (Lake Norman), Morrisville (Lake Norman). All great areas. Tega Cay and Rock Hill have lower gas prices being in SC and the Tega Cay schools are great I hear. All other areas I've listed are just nice areas from what I've seen, can't comment on the school systems. You'll fit right in around CLT, lots of northern transplants. Just get used to waving at people, being serious here.

Also, grew up in Concord. It's nice but full of NASCAR junkies during certain times of the year. I would stay out of Charlotte city if at all possible.

Yes, he is correct even look at Johnston Co south of Wake great place to live. Clayton, Archers Lodge, Wilsons Mills ie Smithfield. It's a up and coming great place to live. Finally getting some good micro brews, Here where I live a friend of mine has a distillery south of Benson called http://broadslabdistillery.com/ He just spent a lot of money for a tasting room in an old barn that looks amazing with all of the work that has been done.

Charlotte has quite a few nice places to eat, and some fancy buildings in the city proper. So far as cities go, it's not too bad. It's a pretty cool place for "modern" people, with many of the neat new things you'll find in more civilized states. There are people tubes hanging between buildings, for crying out loud; in NC! It's like some Jetsons shit.

They have a new NASCAR museum, and it doesn't suck. I'm not a huge fan of the series, and I found the place very entertaining. There's all manner of things to do, and the exhibits are great. I imagine kids would love it.

Crime is nothing like it is in the East. It kind of feels like something is missing in that regard, actually. Now that I really think about it, the whole place always feels more empty than it looks to me. It's a fancy area, but it feels strange. Maybe it's too clean; too orderly. I don't know.

They've clearly worked up some way to keep people like me out, and hidden it very, very well. Either that, or it's right out in the open, and just too big to see. Either way, something's underneath it all that I'm not supposed to be liking.

Bah. Who the fuck would want to live next to me, anyway. It's probably a good thing.

I have four problems with Charlotte, as opposed to other cities I've been to.

1: It's not easy to find smokes and, when you finally do, you can't fucking smoke them.

2: Parking sucks.

3: It's a bit on the snobby side of hipster.

4: There's some old man walking around there that blows his nose in his beard.

I like NC, but I prefer the Eastern side, where things are a bit less tame. We've got more mud, more pickups, more donks, bigger wheels, more gangs, more crime (quantity over quality, unfortunately), and certainly more beaches. It's too bad the West got all the mountains.

Cheers,

Kennith

If one could mash NC together between Washington NC and Morganton it would be a much better state. I like Charlotte, its nice to visit. Asheville isnt so bad, if I was in WNC I shoot for Sylva maybe even Morganton. The only thing eastern NC has is BBQ. The biggest thing about the "burbs" is traffic, I hate traffic. If i had to drive into Raleigh from the periphery everyday I'd certainly have to be committed.

I have a buddy that lives in Charlotte and he loves it. I'm sure it's like everywhere else where there are nice areas, and some crappy ones. The real estate market seems to be pretty good there since there are many companies bringing in new young employees, and the investment clients should be there as well since there are lots of people with money there. I am in the mortgage field as well. Charlotte did take a hit, but not as bad as some places. You will be close to Uwharrie, which is a lot of fun. The lake is a big deal for many up there. You'll be 3 hours from the coast as well. I like being near the water myself. I'm in Wilmington, and if we can get the crime back under control it will be a nice town once again.

How are taxes in NC? State/county/sales?

Here you go: http://www.dornc.com/incometaxupdates/presentations/rates.pdf

According to the information within the link listed above, tax year 2014 the state rate was 5.8% and the 2015 rate will be 5.75%.

More information here http://www.dornc.com/practitioner/law_changes_2014.html and here http://www.dornc.com/publications/propertyrates.html
While the state sales tax is 4.75%, local municipalities can add to that, resulting in average sales tax rate of 6.75% to 7%, although some counties may be as high as 8/8.25%
