1996 D1, with 79K and a 4.0

So my cruise dies; after a couple of PM's to PT and about 1 hour worth of reading here on "search", I'm ready to kick its ass! Things I did:

Checked fuse #18 under steering wheel panel........................................ok
Dash switch lights up on-and-off on command........................................ok
Checked Seemens black relay under passenger side panel...faint "click-click" when switch turned on-off and ignition on position II, but engine off..................ok (?)
Rubber servo (by throtle body) checked for vacuum. Removed the hose and finger-sealed it and depressed the bladder. Holds vacuum until released.............ok
Found a couple of cracks on the hose by the plastic T-valve; REPLACED HOSE

********still no cruise********

Found Cruise pump under jack, by headlights. Hose into it had big crack; REPLACED HOSE

********still no cruise********

Took pump out of truck and tested/jumped it straight to the battery..........fires right up and has suction...................................................................................ok
road test, BUT I STILL HAVE NO CRUISE :banghead:

ideas? I'm fairly new to mechanics, but I've been getting my feet VERY wet with my D1. I basically bought it for that reason; to learn and enjoy fixing it. I thought I did a good job, but I was very dissapointed when at the end of the day it didn't fire up!

What else is there? ECU (if so, location)? Steering wheel switches? any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I gave up on trying to fix mine.

Still looking for an aftermarket one. There is a company in England that told me they could install one, but I would have to take the truck there. They told me they could'nt ship to the states.:(

Hi Steve,

forgot to mention I did that too. The switch looks to be be in great condition and so is the hose inside the truck. No problems there (checked the brake switch also while there...seemed ok!)

WTF??????

I went through all the same steps to fix my non-working cruise in my 98 D1 with no luck. But, when I was replacing my headlight switch I found a 3 amp fuse under the steering column shroud that was blown [I believe it was a recall fix to prevent cruise wiring chafing in the rotator coupling area]. Replaced it - cruise works now.

Woah.... Be careful there. That fuse is there to prevent the bag from lighting on its own.

Sounds like the spiral cassette woudl be somethign to look at.

Well...if i recall correctly (hardly use the cruise, and mine works perfect for now--doesnt that just chap ya! here you are WANTING it and it doesnt work, and mine works and i dont need it lol)...

above 28MPH...45KMH...push the dash button and pull the SET/ACCEL switch on the right of the steering wheel toward you. Hold it for a few seconds, and the truck should maintain speed. If this is how you have been doing it, then yes, your cruise control problem is complicated!

Did you check the switch(es) on the steering wheel? For additional diagnostics you could run a jumper wire from the pump control into the cabin and check for voltage when you engage the SET/ACCEL button above the minimum speed.

The ECU is behind the glovebox. There is a small black box mounted to the right side of the HVAC, the cruise ECU is just to the right of that. Silver box appx. 3"x5".

thanks Dave, I appreciate it. I haven't heard of anybody's CC ECU going bad, but I'm running out of things to check :wtf: , and on the 'cheap $ to expensive $$$$ scale', this is next!
